Cat behaving strangely - Should I be concerned? |
|
Last night he was perfectly fine - gobbled down dinner and snuggled.
This morning I couldn't find him for a while in my apartment; he turned up under the bed, and the only time he usually goes there is when strangers are around. He's usually a very touchy-snuggly kind of cat and has avoided me all day, walking around with his tail down. I set out wet food, which he has never failed to promptly demolish and he picked at it and walked away. Won't face rub or head butt like usually does, doesn't acknowledge me when I walk into a room, which is unheard of, and when I picked him up a bit ago he let out a long, low yowling meow.
He's about 12-13 years old (Himalayan mix, strictly an indoor cat) that I adopted from a shelter just over three years ago. Any thoughts?

1. Better take him to the vet ASAP. |
|
He obviously isn't feeling well. Is he using his litter box? At his age he might be having urinary tract problems, which can be serious.

or call the vet now.
Sudden change in eating and vocalizing what you interpret as possible pain should have immediate vet attention.

4. When a cat hides like that, that's a sign of a serious problem. |
|
I agree with everyone above. Please get to a vet ASAP. :(

5. I agree with everyone else - something is wrong. |
|
Has he pooped? The description of his tail makes me wonder if he's not constipated - one of the many fun things I had to deal with with my CRF cat.

I woke up in the middle of the night from worry and there was the cat, struggling with a stool. He ate a little wet food that I put some olive oil on, and seems much more himself.

9. older cats are now getting diagnosed |
|
with oxalic crystal blocking (not the traditional struvite crystals). if this is the case then time is of the essence. if he is straining to do ANYTHING get him to the vet post-haste.

was acting like that last month she was constipated with hairballs that wouldn't pass. I thought she was dying. The vet gave her some fluids and sent us home. I figured out what the problem was because she passed some very dry, hair filled poop, most likely because she had had her temperature taken, you know where. Any way the vet said when I called him to say I thought I knew what was wrong told be to get over the counter hair ball formula and use it every day until she had pooped. My Mow, is 20 years old, and is back to being her old self. I'm happy as can be these days to shovel out the box when she goes. Cat poop rawks! Yeah, baby.
