Calling Scotch aficionados
What's your favorite and why?

I've recently taken a shine to the stuff and wanted to know what everybody likes/dislikes.

2. When I can afford it, Johnnie Walker Black Label
Yes, it's a blend - not a single malt.

It is smooth and has a delightful smokiness.

4. Old Parr Whiskey
Because it was my father's choice.

Practically the national drink of Mexico.

(ship the tequila, drink the whiskey!)

5. Macallan Special Reserva
Had it in Scotland; apparently it's not available stateside.

I think the closest description would be sex in a glass. DO NOT add anything, except more Macallan Special Reserva. All else would be anathema. The stuff simply defies description.

But if you're looking for something you can find and afford, Aberlour 12 or 18 aren't bad. The 12 got an 83 from Michael Jackson (the late whisky reviewer Michael Jackson, not the pervy one), which is pretty damn good. Light, sherry cask aged, complex.

Macallan 18 is lovely, Macallan 25 is spectacular. Sherry cask aged, slight hint of orange, smooth as hell, nice very light woody touches ... oh, baby. Prepare to sell a kidney to afford it.

Macallan Special Reserva is the pinnacle of Scotch whisky. Once I am not a grad student I am going to fly to Scotland for the sole purpose of buying some.

Oh god bourbon sucks.

I can't wait until I can afford Scotch again.

6. Lagavulin and Talisker
I like the peat in the Islay malts like Lagavulin. Talisker is smoky and peppery, which I like, and it's also the fist single malt I tried...

7. Craggenmore is the best ever IMHO
Around $45 a bottle. Very complex and smooth.

There's also a wonderful Scotch (from the same region) called Speyburn. Also very smooth, and a bargain at about $22 a bottle.
