Poll question: do you know how to play chess? be honest.
I knew how to play chess for part of a weekend when I was little. It was a weekend getaway to the Gulf Coast. My parents' friend taught me the basics and "played" a few games with me. It seemed fun, but chess never came up again. ;)

I wish I could play, but I don't remember much at all.

Most people, like me, that don't know how to play chess, will be too ashamed to vote. :)

8. Yes and no.
I know what the objective is, and what all the pieces can do. But I have no clue how to form a strategy and execute it. Anybody with any degree of skill at all will always beat me at chess.

15. Sorta
Like MsTryska, I know how all the pieces move, and can even think several moves ahead, but I lack the ability to form a strategy. Plus, I haven't had a anyone to play with in a very long time.

16. I love chess, though I'm not familiar with all the rules.
The way I learned didn't involve "castling" and that crap. I would say that I know the checkers version of chess.

17. I've been playing chess for 35 years
It is, imo, the game of games. One good way to improve skill is to play out the moves of the games of top players. It will definitely make you a better player.

19. I taught myself at the age of eight
My parents bought (neither of which played) me a chess learning system for Christmas one year (it was the sixties) and I picked it up pretty easily. Then I taught my dad so I would have someone to play. (My mom loved bridge but had zero interest in chess.)

I know enough to have a favorite opening system. I own a chess clock and a bunch of books. But I'd rather play backgammon.

Chess doesn't interest me as much as go does.

Maybe if I spent a little more time playing it, I could develop the strategy I need to win.

The people who can play or the people who can't?

I learned when I was really little. Love to play but don't that often. Total patzer.

28. I've played a handfull of times.
My father would never play me because he was afraid he'd lose.

My Mac came with a Chess game. It speaks, saying which pieces have moved. Then cackles at me when it wins, which is always.

29. I probably answered the poll wrong.
I said yes, when really I'm not exactly great at it. I understand all the rules for the different pieces in the game. If I think really hard, I can play, but I do not enjoy it at all. For that reason, I rarely play and I've never gotten "good at it."

32. Yes, but...
I can only win against others, like me, who know the basics and, essentially, play for fun. Someone who goes in with a decent strategy can knock me out in about half an hour!
