My Ocracoke Island NC Pics & Notes (Pic Heavy)
Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 09:02 AM by supernova
I was in Ocracoke this past week and thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I wish I was still there! :loveya:

The whole little island has a a distinct away-at-summer-camp feel. :D Because Ocracoke is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, there are no big developments, just small cottages, inns, and B&Bs. There's not a big box store in sight; all businesses are Mom & Pop operations so everything is one-of-a-kind. :D

Ocracoke is remote, you have to take your boat there, or take the ferry:

Beach looking north toward Cape Hatteras:

Looking south::

Ocracoke Lighthouse (unfortunately it's too much of an antique to climb)

British Cemetary
During WW2 an armored British trawler patrolling the NC coast was sunk by a German sub. The Outer Banks are full of stories about German ships prowling the NC Coast during the war. This Cemetery is considered official British Soil and is maintained by the US Coast Guard Ocracoke Station. Sadly, most of the crew were lost at sea, but a few were found and were buried here.

Best place to see a harborside sunset (Jolly Roger Bar):

1. Lovely
Strange effect with the sun in your last pic. Looks sort of like an eclipse. :hi:

3. Yes, not sure
how that happened. I was trying to capture the whole sunset sequence, but my camera batteries died just before the sun sank into that lovely orange-mauve. :P

Oops, that happened during WW2 not WW1.

11. Wasn't that the most bizarre thing?
Word is out in my neighborhood. LOL. One of my friends who is principal at the old middle school told some folks at dinner last night and they all can't believe it.

This could get interesting.

6. Oh Go, it's just beautiful
Really, the whole stinkin' island is gorgeous.

The best thing to do is park your car and rent a bike. You can bike or walk to just about anywhere you need to be. The only exception is you do have to drive down to the beach. It's only a couple of miles, but it was too far for me to carry my stuff.

8. Thank you for sharing those pics. I'm a Tar-Heel, but I never
get tired of the Barrier Islands and Outer Banks. They are rich with history from the "Bumble Bee" project of WW11 to Blackbeard and his buried treasures and jillions of stories heroism along the shoreline and of course each lighthouse has an interesting srory. We're very proud of our coast. Thanks again for sharing.
