my computer has gone evil
I cannot access most of the google realm, meaning I can't get on gmail, images, maps, youtube, or news. I also cannot get on yahoo.

I've tried resetting the cache, and fiddled with proxy and firewall settings, all to no avail. I have Java and Javascript enabled.

Any suggestions?

4. the two are unrelated, karma wise
the computer problems came first. So maybe karma was helping me out with the Brady injury.

3. Assuming you're using XP (may work on Vista, too)...
the simplest thing to do is use "Restore" to take it back to just before this happened. It's gotten me out of lots of troubleseveral times.

If you've never done this, click the Start button, then Help. Some mention of Restore should be right there.

Good chance you'll lose cookies and saved passwords when you do this, so make sure you have all of them handy.

5. Tried another browser?
Maybe the browser you're using is infected.

But before that, maybe try pinging the sites. If you're using XP, go to Start-> Run and type "command". In that box type "ping www.yahoo.com" or "ping www.youtube.com". If you get positive results then obviously the traffic is getting there, just something in the browser needs clearing out.

I'm not that much of an expert anymore, but it's worth a shot.

Mark.

6. Congratulations. You have a rootkit.
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 04:22 PM by mainegreen
In fact, it sounds exactly, to a tee, like the one I had two weeks ago.
You have one solution: completely reinstall the operating system after doing a hard drive wipe.

Sorry.

Better sooner than later, because that rootkit is monitoring everything you do and everything you send over the internet.

Do NOT log into any personal sites, like your bank, right now.

8. Further, I bet the google home page comes up, but actual searches fail right?
and if you attempt to search on a lesser know search engine, like clusty it works, right?

11. problem solved
I had a filtering app running in the background. I'd forgotten it does that at boot up. I disabled and deleted the offending app, and my mac is back to normal.

13. sorry about that
I knew it was something on my computer blocking ports, since I could still access all the unavailable pages on my phone.
