Houston DU'er is a nervous wreck (election, Ike) |
|
I'm having a cocktail and trying not to think about trips to the corporate lumberyards to pick up the right plywood that will likely not be in supply to keep my east bay window from crashing in thanks to Hurricane Ike, AND the thought of McCain/Palin being sworn in after 8 years of failure....these two things are wrecking my nerves!
I really will be fine, I think. I'll lose a few things in the storm, but not my life. But the threat is there, with the storm, and the threat of McCain (temper/wrongheadedness) and Palin (vindictive/religious zealot)....this is the perfect storm on my nerves and I'm usually pretty stalwart!
At least I'll get to know my neighbors a little better.
p.s. I'm not part of the mandatory evacuation area, but that doesn't mean much. They don't want people on the roads right now unless you are in the flood storm surge areas.

2. you should be okay up there |
|
It should be close to dead by then and provide some needed rain. I'll be far away from the two bay windows. That's like being near a grenade that could go off at any minute.

3. They are even predicting flash flooding, up to possibly 6" here... |

sometimes I really wish I didn't have a creek behind my house.
Do stay away from your windows. Would it help to tape them, if not board them up?
edit: Whew... I am relieved to report that was 6" not 6'! Glad they repeated it on the news! lol

4. I'll be taping at least. |
|
The window is 9 feet by 6 feet, but it's made up of 6 real panes, with a bracing structure of metal that sort of divides the 6 panes into 15 panes.
But I doubt they can handle anything close to a 90mph wind. I need to find plywood, but it will be tough. Heh, even the plywood could bow and place more pressure at a spot and break the window, but at least it would protect the wind from the rest of the house.
I'm 50 miles inland, and have no idea how coastal residents cope with this crap.

|
Only time of the year I'm glad we live inland.
Hope you can find some plywood!

7. Music is a good calmer |
|
Listening to all my favorite songs and feeling better...but when you hear that big roar outside, there's nothing that will calm you.
Maybe I can walk around like Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now and everyone is ducking for cover, and he's being suicidal and walking around like nothing is happening! Nope. I'll be safe in the best part of the house.
