What song FOR YOU is forever associated with 09/11/01?
I saw a thread on Totalfark, and it got me thinking...

Mine is Five For Fighting's "Superman (It's Not Easy)".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84b949k8HCw

First time i ever heard it i was driving home from work on that day, and the lyrics caught me so off-guard that i had to pull over and just put my head on the steering wheel until the tears stopped.

I still have trouble listening to it...

Sappy, huh?!

~*~*~*~

I can’t stand to fly
I’m not that naive
I’m just out to find
The better part of me

I’m more than a bird...i’m more than a plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
It’s not easy to be me

Wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
About a home I’ll never see

It may sound absurd...but don’t be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed...but won’t you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream
It’s not easy to be me

Up, up and away...away from me
It’s all right...you can all sleep sound tonight
I’m not crazy...or anything...

I can’t stand to fly
I’m not that naive
Men weren’t meant to ride
With clouds between their knees

I’m only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me
Inside of me
Inside me
Yeah, inside me
Inside of me

I’m only a man
In a funny red sheet
I’m only a man
Looking for a dream

I’m only a man
In a funny red sheet
And it’s not easy, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm...

Its not easy to be me

1. Enya's Only Time does,not sure why.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IjIG_7Zt4U

Who can say where the road goes,
Where the day flows, only time?
And who can say if your love grows,
As your hearth chose, only time?

Who can say why your heart sights,
As your live flies, only time?
And who can say why your heart cries
when your love lies, only time?

Who can say when the roads meet,
That love might be ,in your heart?
and who can say when the day sleeps,
and the night keeps all your heart?
Night keeps all your heart.....

Who can say if your love groves,
As your heart chose, only time?
And who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows, only time?

Who knows? Only time
Who knows? Only time

The radio stations played it all of the time in the months following, but it wasn't too annoying... I thought it fit.

8. Let's Roll by Neil Young
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/neilyoung/letsroll.html

"Let's Roll"

I know I said I love you,
I know you know it's true,
I've got to put the phone down,
and do what we got to do.

One's standing in the iselway,
Two more at the door,
We've got to get inside there,
Before they kill somemore.

Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

No time for indecision,
We've got to make a move,
I hope that were foregiven,
For what we got to

How this all got started,
I'll never understand,
I hope someone can fly this thing,
And get us back to land.

Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

No one has the answer,
But one thing is true,
You've got to turn on evil,
When it's coming after you,
You've gota face it down,
And when it tries to hide,
You've gota go in after it,
And never be denied,
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

Let's roll for freedome,
Let's roll for love,
We're going after satan,
On the wings of a dove,
Let's roll for justice,
Let's roll for truth,
Let's not let our children,
Grow up fearfull in there youth.

Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.
Time is runnin' out,
Let's roll.

It was written about the flight itself. I think the passengers wanted to take back the plane and their rally cry was "Let's Roll." :(

Sadly, many versions have been made.
The first time I saw it, it was the speeded up version. I laughed very hard, and felt very dirty afterwards.

30. New York Minute ~ The Eagles
Harry got up
Dressed all in black
Went down to the station
And he never came back
They found his clothing
Scattered somewhere down the track
And he won't be down
On Wall Street in the morning

He had a home
The love of a girl
But men get lost sometimes
As the years unfurl
One day he crossed some line
And he was too much in this world
But I guess it doesn't matter anymore

In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
Things can get pretty strange
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute

Lying here in the darkness
I hear the sirens wail
Somebody's going to emergency
Somebody's going to jail
If you find somebody to love in this world
You better hang on tooth and nail
The wolf is always at the door

In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
Things can get pretty strange
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute

And in these days
When darkness falls early
And people rush home
To the ones they love
You better take a fool's advice
And take care of your own
One day they're here
Next day they're gone

I pulled my coat around my shoulders
And took a walk down through the park
The leaves were falling around me
The groaning city in the gathering dark
On some solitary rock
A desperate lover left his mark
Baby, I've changed
Please come back

What the head makes cloudy
The heart makes very clear
The days were so much brighter
In the time when she was here
But I know there's somebody somewhere
Make these dark clouds disappear
Until that day, I have to believe
I believe, I believe

In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
You can get out of the rain
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute

37. Tuesday Morning by Melissa Etheridge
Admittedly it was written specifically about Mark Bingham, one of the people killed on Flight 93

10:03 on a Tuesday morning
In the fall of an American dream
Man is doing what he knows is right
On Flight 93

Loved his mom and he loved his dad
Loved his home and he loved his man
But on that bloody Tuesday morning
He died an American

Now you cannot change this
And you can't erase this
You can't pretend this is not the truth

Even though he could not marry
Or teach our children in your schools
Because who he wants to love
Is breaking your God's rules

He stood up on a Tuesday morning
In the terror he was brave
And he made his choice, and without a doubt
A hundred lives he must have saved

Now you cannot change this
And you can't erase this
You can't pretend this is not the truth

And the things you might take for granted
Your inalienable rights
Some might choose to deny him
Even though he gave his life

Can you live with yourself in the land of the free
If they make him less of a hero than the other three
Well it might begin to change here
In a field in Pennsylvania

Now you cannot change this
And you can't erase this
You can't pretend this is not the truth

Stand up America
Hear the bell now as it tolls
Wake up America
It's Tuesday morning
C'mon, let's roll

Now you cannot change this
And you can't erase this
You can't pretend this is not the truth

38. Nick Drake's "Time Has Told Me"
I was living in NY 9/11/01. I was to start my Doctoral Program the next day with all day classes on the 12th through the 15th. Classes were canceled 9/12 but we spent 12 hour days in class the 13th through the 15th. The point being that, up in White Plains, NY, there were about 30 of us that were kept busy with other things to think about....

One big thing I remember of that day, and the days following was the overwhelming silence. Our community had a handful of people die in the attacks, the local grocery stores were silent, 7-11, Gas Stations, Delis - all were open, but everybody was just not talking much. So, what I associate with the days after the event is silence. My Brother was starting his Sophomore Year at NYU...he came up with a couple friends to stay a while with us later that week.

I saw "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" at the Jacob Burns Film Center the evening of Monday September 10 and was particularly fond of a song by Jeb Loy Nichols called "Heaven Right Here" - and just generally being pretty content with life....That was September 10 stuff......

So, why Nick Drake?

On the first Anniversary, I spent the day mulling over the events and working. That evening, after the rest of the family went to bed, I went out driving around northern Westchester, rural and beautiful at night with all those reservoirs holding the NYC water supply reflecting the stars. I was listening to WFUV which was playing appropriate music for the occasion, and "Time Has Told Me" came on, I just pulled over and let it all go......

41. American Tune by Paul Simon
Many's the time I've been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and I've often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but I'm all right, I'm all right
I'm just weary to my bones
Still, you don't expect to be
Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home

And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
or driven to its knees
but it's all right, it's all right
for we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the
road we're traveling on
I wonder what's gone wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what's gone wrong

And I dreamed I was dying
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying

We come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age's most uncertain hours
and sing an American tune
Oh, and it's alright, it's all right, it's all right
You can't be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day
And I'm trying to get some rest
That's all I'm trying to get some rest
