1. Sigh. It goes up when a barrel of oil goes up,
and it goes up if a barrel of oil goes down. They got us right where they want us. :hi:

2. To be fair to the industry, though
The price of gas also goes up if the price of oil remains the same. :puke:

3. Gas station was packed tonight
I paid $3.75 tonight. I'm sure as I drive with Lelapin (2 cars) down to Columbus this weekend, it'll be close to $5 because of Ike.

12. Don't lose hope, if the stations are closed, then gas probably won't change until the morning...
or even around noon. Some of the smaller stations don't change gas prices till the larger chains do, and they have to confirm it by actually seeing the change. This means there's a delay, see if you can use that tomorrow.

Luckily, the gas station is two blocks from my house- I'd hate to make a trek at this time of night.

15. So far as I can tell, oil is $US100.87 a barrel
Up 47 cents, which does not seem much of a rise:

So why should gas prices go up a dollar?

16. They're blaming it on Hurricane Ike.
Due to the hurricane, the Texas gulf coast refineries are being shut down as a flood precaution. As those refineries produce about 20-25% of the regions gas, it will put a strain on supply. That's the story anyway.

What gets me is that they've been refining oil for a while now, and have been through a few hurricane seasons. Why the hell can't they figure out how to stockpile some of the stuff to account for the "freak" weather occurrences?

The reality is that when the hurricane season is over, lo and behold the oil companies will have had another record quarter even though they produced less gas. Gee, I wonder how that happens.

19. While I could give a snarky response,
I'll just say that it took me quite a bit of work to get myself into a place where I can either walk or take public transportation from my home to where I work and the places I shop.

20. How can I be the first No vote?
We're really projecting more than a dollar in one day? Okay. I like my chances.

Of course, criteria wasn't specified. Nationally there's zero chance it rises more than a buck. Perhaps in certain areas impacted by Ike.

I did fill up tonight, at 3.49. Even if it moved a dime I'd be sick if I lost value.

21. What am I doing up at this ungodly hour?
Well actually the dog woke me up to tell me there was a CAT! In the HOUSE! As there has been for the past fifteen years. Oddly, she doesn't object to the new one, it's the old one she barks at. But rather than going back to sleep, I went out and bought gas. Because the gas stations were freakin' insane yesterday. Cars lined up around the block, and all honking like crazy - as if that would get them to the pumps any faster. I haven't seen anything this bad since Carter was President.

The gas station was limiting purchases to ten gallons. No problem: that filled my tank nicely, since I drive a small car. I'm almost sorry that I didn't line up yesterday, so that I could indulge in a bout of Schadenfreude: "Sorry about your Hummer, dude". Smirk, smirk.

23. Local gas station that has mechanical pumps has shut down.
Besides it can't sell gas for any more than $3.99 a gallon.

Yesterday it had $3.59 gallon for gas, lights on and appeared open for business.

Today, sign said $3.99 but the place was dark. No "beer" neon sign in the window.

Mark.

25. Hate replying to my own thread but want to give it a kick...
... I gave my wife explicit instructions to fill up with gas this morning and take my card as payment. She was compliant; and she filled up.

Good thing: there are gas stations closing all around us now for no gas. Couple of the big gas stations that still have gas have long queues and higher prices. In Troy, NC, gas has been selling for $5.98 a gallon. http://www.digtriad.com/news/top/article.aspx?storyid=110673&catid=14

We were planning on going to the beach this weekend. My wife's co-worker has a beach house that she owns (she only has two houses, she's no McSame; she knows how many houses she owns) and she lets her friends stay there when she or her family isn't. We got a turn this weekend but if we can't get gas then there's no point in going.

Regards, Mark.
