I always used to take mine to the vet when they had worms. They got a shot, then went back some time later for a follow-up shot.

3. Is the active ingredient piperazine?

If so, then it's likely fine for roundworms, threadworms, whipworms, and pinworms--but not for other kinds, like hookworms or tapeworms. Expect to see live worms coming out, by the way--piperazine doesn't poison them or kill them, it just keeps them from being able to hang on inside, so worms get expelled with normal bowel movements. Make sure you do a lot of litter box care that involves hot water and soap in the next few days, so your pet doesn't get re-infected with worm eggs that are still hanging around. :hi:

6. It only gets rid of a few more common kinds of worms, but it works fine for those.

The problem is, you presumably don't know what kind of worms you're dealing with. For that reason, it's best to have the vet either prescribe a heavy duty wormer that kills most of them, or run a fecal sample and prescribe the specific treatment for whatever parasites your companion has. That said, I use that stuff exactly on new arrivals as soon as I bring them home (before they can go to the vet) and have never had one turn up as having any kind of worms, which is pretty darn unusual, so it would likely take care of your problem. I also occasionally put food out for ferals spiked with that stuff and an oral flea med, I figure I can't home them all but I can at least help to keep them healthy by keeping their parasites to a minimum.

9. That's the OTC wormer I use.

For fleas, I buy a fast-acting (capstar) and a long-acting prescription treatment (advantage) on ebay, because in my experience the OTC ones don't work well, and I've heard some aren't safe. If you like I can point you to the seller I use, he's very fast and his prices are good. I would steer clear of the ones selling overseas packaging, dog doses you divide up for cats, etc, but he sells the exact packages you get from the vet's office. Your pet store might also have them, you don't need approval from a vet.

13. Sure, I use Advantage for flea control, and I give Capstar to new kitties to eliminate any existing

infestation. The Advantage you should be able to get at most pet stores, I just buy it online because it's a bit cheaper that way and with quite a few cats the savings are considerable. If I recall the retail price correctly, 6 mos worth for one cat runs about $45.

15. No, the capstar goes in their food- it's a pill. The Advantage goes between the shoulderblades.

Garlic may help as a flea preventative, but I've heard mixed things about it's safety with cats, so personally I wouldn't rely on it. I do put a little nutritional yeast on my cats' food occasionally- it's said to repel fleas, it's crazy nutritious and my cats love it. It's a yellow powder or flake you can find in the bulk section in health food stores.

22. I think I'm confusing you, and I apologize, since I've mentioned a bunch of different stuff.

My vet gave my kittens a broad spectrum wormer, I don't know the name. That was just a preventative, in my experience D-Worm will clear up most problems and keep kittens from getting wormy.

The Advantage and Capstar are both for fleas. The Capstar gets rid of existing infestations in an hour or two, the Advantage keeps them away for months. If your cat doesn't have a lot of fleas to begin with or you're not taking in strays, just the Advantage is fine.

My cats are not infested,,,but I have seen the wild flea or two on their chins...wanted to nip that in the bud. Also, they are healthy and don't act wormy but, WARNING gross stuff ahead....

I did see a little white worm crawling out of Shocco's anus :wow: :puke: I can't afford a Vet right now x(

So, I bought the D-Worm and the Bio-Spot for both him and his brother, Shiloh.

19. I saw a cat poisoned by dog flea control on AP

There is a flea product that is safe for dogs that is toxic and potentially fatal for cats, causes seizures, fatal if untreated. I saw it on Animal Emergency. I wanted to get some ear cleaner from the store but the vet told me that some of them are actually harmful.

so in theory there's no reason not to get the dog dose and split it up, but I'd worry about measuring it out wrong and applying too much.

Flea control medicines that don't say they're safe for cats (most supermarket dog stuff) usually contain pyrethrins (I have no idea if I spelled that right) which are toxic to cats. To be on the safe side, if I had a dog and cat household, I'd stick to cat safe flea meds, shampoo, etc.
