Observation on the Mass Pike.
We just drove the Mass Pike from the very western end to the Rt. 128/I-95 exit.
About 130 miles.

When we got on, I set the cruise at 70 mph.
I was faster than about 3/4 of the rest of the traffic.
By the time we neared the 128 exit, I was slower than 90% of the traffic.

From this I deduce that the closer you get to Boston, the more intense becomes your desire is to BE there.
People here REALLY love Boston.
;-)

1. Greetings from Quincy!!
What are you doing up here? :hi:

Also, out West, there's a higher concentration of State Cops on the prowl than out here. ;)

4. It's because it gets wider, closer to Boston. But look out for those Mass drivers;
they're worse than ANYONE outside Europe for changing lanes without signaling (or even looking in a mirror).

5. Speaking as a relocatee
(is that even a word?), I can understand the sentiment. I moved here 18 years ago for grad school, and I fell in love with this place. My job requires me to work several weeks in the Berkshires during the summer, and I can't explain the rush I feel when I get to the Weston tolls. Don't get me wrong - I love the Berkshires, but I get this really cool rush at the Allston tolls, knowing that in about 30 seconds, I'm going to get a birds-eye-view of the Citgo sign and the downtown skyline and my new hometown.

6. Heh...it's a fast area.
I've driven in quite a few states and Mass (New England in general, actually) is among the fastest. The Staties rarely do less than 80, and won't bag you because every other car is going just as fast as you are. The average speed on Rt. 128 and 495/95 is around 80 at almost all times.

When I brought my ex-wife to Mass from Ohio we were just a few minutes into Connecticut and a car came screaming onto the highway beside us, blowing past us (I was doing about 80). I looked over, laughed, and said, "Welcome to New England."

9. We now bypass CN.
Take either the Taconic or NY Thruway up to I-90.
My nerves just can't handle interstate driving in CN any more.
