1. Whoa.
He looks strong. I'm sort of glad my son does long distance track instead... I'd be constantly scared if he played football. Still, good for your boy!

21. It's actually safer that you'd think.
If the boy's are in good shape, the joint injuries get minimized, and the pads protect the rest. Still a contact sport though. On the other hand, soccer and basketball are very much contact sport, but the players have no protection at all.

Glad to hear your son is running track. I love youth sports, as I think it can really help to round out a childs experience.

22. I dated the HS quarterback. His knees were destroyed
and he never recovered full use... that's the origin of my bias, I suppose. Also, I don't let my kids do sports until they're old enough to really want to. Lots of parents have been critical! but it's worked well for us.

Go, 14!

2. Dude, you shoot those?
Looks like a mammajamma of a lens — 600mm, I'd guess.

4. I did, with a 400mm Nikon.
I took all three fron the top row of the stands, and the second two were on the visitor side of the field. Thankfully his game was at 5:30, so there was plenty of light!

5. That looks longer than 400
Oh, wait — digital? So it's the 35mm equivalent of about 600.

7. I believe that's how it works.
The only problem with it is it's a 4.5, so it's fine direct sunlight. If it's foggy or dark, there's no way I can get those shots.

8. That's where the big $ comes in
I've shot stuff in all kinds of light, including tons of sports, so I the only lens I have slower than 2.8 is my 35-105 zoom, which is a 3.5–4.

I'd kill for the Canon 400 2.8L IS USM...

...and this to put it on...

...but that's about $12,000. :(

13. No kidding.

I've seen some reasonably priced ($2,000 to $2,500) 2.8 400mm on eBay, but they're coming from shops in Japan and I'd be a little worried on that.

as a marching band alum, it was an essential part of my life growing up.

6. So do I. It's still pure at the HS level.
Unfortunately it turns into a job when you hit college.

My last drummer started in the marching band. Never touched a drum kit until he was in his thirties!

What was your instrument?

19. I play guitar also.
Along with the bass, and I think that's why I dig the sax so much. You can bend notes, get sustain and vibrato, and push notes into distortion. Great blues instrument the sax!

It's really cool finding out how many musicians we have here at DU.

15. I've heard that.
I coached my son through the junior levels, and we had a few kids that had played in Texas. Talking with some of the dads, they said pretty much the same thing. Too bad, it should be fun when you're a kid!x(

10. I was regulated to playing cymbals in my freshman year in marching band
The seniors would always try to take my cymbals over when playing the national anthem. I was always like,"No way! This is my only time to shine! No, you can't have my cymbals!"

25. I always thought that I would make a great drum major
but I wouldn't have looked good on the podium. LOL..Every drum major I ever dealt with was a girl. Are all drum majors girls? I don't even know.

26. No we had may boy/girl teams of DMs
My cousin's co-conductor was a guy.

Our school had a few male conductors.

Depending on how many we marched we had two or three conductors. When I was drum major my cohort was female.

I just never have seen a male drum major since I started attending school games. I don't watch college football, so I wasn't sure.

It doesn't show does it? He's a really good kid though, so it's kinda hard not to be proud. But then again, as my Granny used to say: "Every crow thinks theirs is the blackest"!:)

And it was great to meet you. I really look forward to having a Bay Area DUer get-together so we can put some more faces to the screen names!

24. He's strong side linebacker and fullback.
I didn't get any good shots of him on offense. The game plan last night was mostly QB options and halfback sweeps, so my son was doing a lot of blocking. Maybe next week he'll get a handoff or two.
