I just gave my son $30K
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 08:22 PM by Bluesplayer
I'm pretty sick, so I was able to get my life insurance company to pay my death benefit to me in advance in what they call an "accelerated benefit."

Yesterday, I gave $30,000 to my son and his wife for a down payment on their 1st home.

I guess my point is that this way, I get to share in and enjoy their excitement. Made me tear up a little, but I loved being able to do it!

PS - I also gave BO 2300! I hope I get to see his inauguration...

1. My dear Bluesplayer...
What a lovely and generous thing for you to do!

But I'm truly sorry to hear that you're that ill...

I too hope that you live long enough to see Obama inaugurated...

Plus you still need to vote!

3. Serenity and wisdom to you.
Never knew about that benefit. The housing market is set to hit bottom in 2009. It just depends on where your son is going to buy.

8. I'm sorry to hear of your illness.
Your accelerated benefit is worth so much more. Not only is this independence and the realization of the dream of most Americans, considering the timing of their purchase, they couldn't be getting more value for your dollar.

Their lives should forever be better for your gift.

In addition, you should send your story to Obama's campaign folks. Bet that would give them a boost.

16. What an awesome thing to do.
I applaud your wisdom in a situation where few get to show their true character.

So sorry to hear of your illness, and though I haven't met you here before, I'm a better man for hearing your story, and I'm glad to have met a fellow bluesman.

Peace to you Bluesplayer.

17. some questions regarding this ...for all who wonder if they too can do the same
if you die, is there any insurance left, or have you let the company off the hook completly?

do you have other insurance to bury you?

does the insurance company have any hook on you after paying out? do they have any claim on any future benefits to your children/estate?

enjoying themselves.

28. Wow, you give me hope!
There are times that I lose faith in people. But people like
you remind me that wonderful human beings--and wonderful fathers in particular--are
out there. We often hear so much about bad news, but your story is about
hope, grace and the beauty of a selfless, generous heart.

Your post warmed me up and made me feel good about the world.

Thank you. I wish you well, and no matter what you face--please
remember that you have made this world a better place.

:)

My grandmother, before she died, gave us grand children $20,000 a piece. She told us to spend on it something fun and whatever we wanted. I've saved half, paid off some credit card bills, and bought an awesome tv that reminds me of her everytime I turn it on.

41. I will be rooting for you
hoping that you make it.

I have been in remission for 2 years now--they gave me a few weeks to live in the summer of 2006--I managed to get an experimental surgery that saved my life around labor day 2006.

Sometimes--even when it seems grim--there is still hope. Stay strong and enjoy every minute with your family. Hopefully you and I both will be around for a long time.
