I remember the scene in The Great Escape where Steve McQueen and a few of the other American POWs threw an Independence Day party. The majority of the camp who were British, Australian, etc. looked on in bemusement.

- What is it?
- They're celebrating the revolution!

Nice touch there because of course most Brits in 1943 probably have never seen that day celebrated.

Then this toast between a couple of officers:

- To the colonies.
- Independence!
- How are you managing over there without us? Getting along all right, are you? :rofl:

But, of course, the entire camp was officers. Per the convention, officers had to be treated somewhat nicely. Enlisted men got sent to work camps.
