My Uncle Max died on Saturday...

He died of lung cancer. By the time the cancer was detected, it had spread to his bones. He started chemo but stopped it as it made him so sick. He wanted to enjoy his last couple of months and not spend them attached to a needle.

My Uncle Max was like a father to me when I was growing up. My father was in the military and spent some time overseas without my Mom and me. We stayed with my aunt and uncle, so my uncle Max became "my father." He never had kids of his own and always treated my cousin and me like we were his sons. He took us camping, fishing, boating, hunting (I hated hunting), and snowmobiling -- we were his "boys" and we loved hanging out with him. He always made time for us and the times we spent with him were always special.

I lost my father in February to lung cancer, and now my Uncle Max. I miss them both so much, I can't stand it. What I wouldn't give to have one more day with both of them.

RIP, Uncle Max...say hello to my father when you see him.

I always try to leave a kind word when someone has lost a family member or a pet -- I guess I assumed that everyone was as considerate.

Uncle Max sounds like he was a warm and loving guy. He made your childhood a lot richer when your dad was not around. I'm sorry about your dad, too.

He sounds like my Grampa. Always there when no one else was and didn't make us feel funny about it.
It hurts severely but be grateful you had him in your life. He was responsible in making you who you are now and I doubt he'd want you to grieve too much. Try to remember the things he taught you and know that this is not forever.
