So we have a major cat issue. |
|
A tortie (she's ten now) adopted us about 5 years ago. This am, I noticed she couldn't walk on her left leg. My husband left for Baltimore early am. I brought her to our vet---her hip popped out, they were like she got hit by a car or had a fall. She was in last night and sleeps on our ledges we have a 2 story living room) so we think she fell.
Local vet couldn't pop the hip in (it kept coming out) so I'm bringing her to Athens to a specialist tomorrow. Bottom line----anout 4 grand. We are not looking for cash---we have the money on hand.....although it's less cash we put on our Hybrid---which should be in any day. So many family and friends think we're crazy-------I want to hear what the specialist has to say---even though the crazy cat swiped my nose and eye 2 weeks ago.
I feel so bad for her.

and you love the cat, do what you have to do, and ignore other people 's opinions.

3. What procedure do they have planned? |
|
Regardless, I can say this:
1. Good on you taking care of the cat;
2. Glad you have the money;
3. REALLY glad you're not listening to the "think you're crazy" crowd.

6. They are either going to take "the ball out" of the hip. |

I'm no vet, but usually they eliminate the "socket" aspect only if they have the musculature to keep the hip/leg function working (basically, is there a lot of muscle and tendon to make the lack of a ball and socket function work). If it's pins, honestly, I'd get a second opinion on that price. $4k seems a little high for that.
Just my experience that I'm throwing out there.

5. I'm so sorry to hear that |
|
I would also pay any price to make sure my cat was ok. Cars come and go. But cats are family.

7. Ouch! What will you do to keep her from sleeping on the ledge again? |
|
Will being confined cause her to act out?

Ask for an anti-inflammatory to keep kitty comfortable, and Grab those x-rays and set off for a second or even a third opinion.
Vet clinics costs can differ widely. Country clinics are usually cheaper than urban shops.
Good luck to you.

10. Take your cat to another Vet, asap... |
|
From what I remember, from my days of living with a Veterinarian, that is not an uncommon problem and it sounds like someone does not know how to repair a dislocated hip.
Good luck! :hug:

12. I don't want to sound negative, but we had a young cat after we were first married |
|
who fell from the roof and had similar damage. We got the surgery done, but the nerves never recovered. After all the care (8 weeks cage rest, emptying bladder and constantly washing him for anther 2 months) we had to have him put down because the nerves never came back. :(
He went to sleep purring in my arms...
Do get a second opinion. We were lucky to have the excellent vet school @ Oklahoma State who did everything they could.

13. Athens is the place to go. |
|
We have an excellent specialist vet hospital in Atlanta, or i would have been to Athens several times by now.
Best wishes for you and kitty!
