"I hope you are having a good week. I just wanted to give you an update and let you know we're almost done with your references & verifications. I didn't want you to think we'd forgotten or hadn't been working on them."

1. Historically, I'm not a very good judge of such things. Did they seem really interested
in you in the interview?

2. VERY interested. In fact, the final interview of the day - with the director of
administration! - was the best interview I've ever given. She reflected that back to me.

I am optimistic.

you don't get something else. Did you send back a reply?

15. Yep, I did. A thank you, and an "enjoy your day"
I hope it's adequate; I hope I waited long enough! Of course as soon as I got it I wanted to reply, but thought 30 seconds might've seemed desperate. I think i waited 90 . . . ;)

6. No, but I'd think I'd made the first cut...
No, but I'd think I'd made the first cut in their employment process. Although we rarely come across HR departments that are actually pro-active vis-a-vis the prospective employee, there are a few mid-sized companies that do just that-- alerting the recruits of each corner turned in the hiring phase.

This is however, a *perfect* opportunity for you to call or email them and thank them for the notification though. It keeps you active in their brains and illustrates both courtesy and a "follow-up" professionalism on your part.

Good Luck Bertha!

By the way-- your name came up over the weekend. My pals and I were discussing clever names we've come across on the intertubes, and Bertha V. Nation was a top contender for Most Humorous Name Ever (TM). :) :hi:

7. I only wish that name were original!
It's the name of a drag queen in "Torch Song Trilogy." I adopted it. :)

Thanks for your input. I think what you say is more realistic than my "omg, this means i'm in!!!" optimism.

11. Yes.
It may not be a gimme, but that's extremely encouraging. Reading between the lines, I'm guessing that they just want to be sure they can't come up with an obvious reason not to hire you.

I believe you had mentioned a known procrastinator among your references. Here's hoping that they won't keep you waiting much longer!

13. I'm so glad that I don't have to go through torture like that
Before going into business for myself, the last few times I changed jobs was done on a handshake, and "When can you start?".

I hope the best for you Bertha, and as Tom Petty sang "...the wa-aaaaiting is the hardest part.".

16. Most likely.
After I applied and interviewed for my present job I didn't hear anything for weeks so I thought I didn't get it. Then I got a phone call from a company that does background checks (I work in an industry that requires everything but a colonoscopy to hire someone), asking for some additional information, and it was pretty clear they'd done a thorough check which they wouldn't have done if they weren't going to make an offer. They hired me about a week later. So I think it looks good. Good luck!

why would they bother to waste resources checking references if you weren't a contender?

Sounds like they want to keep you in the loop so that you don't go and accept another offer while they go through the process.

I think you are in good shape. Good luck!
