Any insect experts around?
I was in the shower yesterday and I found an inch-long brown insect in there. I went to rescue him, and he stung me!

What could it have been?

1. A kissing bug?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triatominae

These guys are nasty. They sneak up on you at night while you are sleeping and suck blood. They also bite defensively.

They are common in some parts of California, and wicked bad in the Kern River Valley around Lake Isabella, wherever you've got oaks and ground squrrels. They breed in the crevices of rocks or tree bark.

7. They ought to be called vampire bugs.
And the word of the day is: hematophagous

Showering with hematophagous creatures is generally a bad idea.

4. Hmm...
Hmm...

I could soooooo go there right about now, but I won't.

Was he short and round or long and armored? How was his girth? What color was his body and head? Did he have antennae? How long were his antennae? I might be able to help with some more info...if you can remember.

5. You're going to have to describe it better than that
You just described the insect version of a sparrow.

6. It looked like a true bug
but it was long, skinny, and nondescript. Long legs and antennae.

I did some research on teh internets and it fits the description of some type of assassin bug, all the way down to the itchy bite when handled.

That sound right to you?

8. That does sound like a possibility, yes
The description could also cover some blister beetles. You might want to look into them too.

9. I have given up trying to rescue bugs in the bathroom.
Usually when I try to save one, I inadvertently end up squishing or drowning it. So now I just let them take their own chances.

:hi:

14. I used to live in a house infested with them. I woke up when night
to find one crawling on my neck.

Good news is, my cat liked to kill them.

15. Sorry...I was looking for a pic of an assassin bug as you were posting one.
Ouch! They're painful. I've been nabbed in our garden before, but never in the shower. Maybe he was a psycho assassin bug.

19. It's a wind scorpion
Related to those Iraqi camel spiders. This guy was only about 3/4 inch long, but I understand they can bite you pretty good. He was busy digging a hole to hide in during the coming day.
