So... um, Death Magnetic surprisingly does not suck. |
|
You can talk about how Lars ruined internet downloading (yeah, he's still a fucking asshole for doing that). You can talk about how Metallica is responsible for that slab of musical feces known as "St. Anger". You can talk about how they all became whiny little pieces of shit on the documentary "Some Kind Of Monster".
But the fact of the matter is that Death Magnetic is their best album since "And Justice For All". They're definitely on the path to redemption despite their long string of failures in the last ten years. The instrumental "Suicide & Redemption" alone is worth the price of the album.

1. I'd like to talk about Lars, then St. Anger, and how whiny they all are. |
|
:P
I've only heard the one song out so far. The first 5 1/2 minutes sounded like Unforgiven 64, but the last 3 minutes jammed nicely (James should shut up and play more often). Production-wise, it sounded like it should have been on ...And Justice For All.
I want to hear the whole CD, but I'm not going to buy it, so it may be awhile before I do hear it all.

3. It is their best effort since Justice but that isn't saying a whole lot. |
|
There are 4 good tunes on the new disc and only one (My Apocalypse) that approaches the greatness of what they once were. There are a few that are half good, invariably the second half where they just jam out, and The Unforgiven III is terrible. Kirk is the only one who really shines on this album, they let him do solos again and he delivers the goods. It's about a 5 on the 10 scale. Better than the schlock that was Load, Re-Load and the horrendous St. Anger but a far cry from the godlike efforts on the first four releases.

5. Why is everyone touting Justice as a good album? |
|
AJFA, outside of one over-rated track, was spastic, meandering; and, to me at least, came across as nothing more than a training exercise for Newstead. Death Magnetic feels more like a follow up to the three good Metallica albums than anything that came after them. Hell, if you listen close enough, you can even hear the Mustaine influences.
