In memory of Richard Wright.

Pink Floyd - my most favorite rock band ever.

1. My favorite albums:
1. Wish You Were Here
2. Animals
3. Dark Side of the Moon
4. Meddle
5. Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

They are, IMHO, the greatest rock band of all time, and I do not say that lightly. Many came close, but none ever reached the sheer brilliance and artistic imagination of Pink Floyd. I love David Gilmore's guitar playing the most. The notes weren't all that complex to play, but he made each note as his own and put on them a distinct style that would never be matched.

I wish there was a band around today that had the talent of Pink Floyd. Porcupine Tree comes the closest, yet fails to measure up. I wish I was around when all the original members were together. I would have loved to see them in concert.

7. I will never forget when I heard 'TIME' for the first time
I was in the smoking lounge at Navy boot camp. 'Time' came on the radio and there was silence for the whole song. When it was over I looked around the room, and it looked like everyone there had just finished taking about a dozen bong hits.

3. I heard "Meddle" in 1971 when I was 15

and I had to put the top of my head back on after it was over. I was literally :wow:

I'd never heard anything like it and Echoes is still the greatest extended piece of rock music ever, though Close To The Edge and Shine On (You Crazy Diamond) are right up there. 37 years later, Echoes still takes me places no other music can despite hundreds of hearings. Such depth, grace and beauty, all of it supplied by Rick and David. The long build out of the middle underwater section with Rick soloing so tastefully, that climaxes with what I've always though of as the "starburst" or "fireworks" guitar outburst before the last verse still sends chills up my spine.

Fare well on your eternal journey through the cosmos, Rick, and say hi to your fellow space pioneer Carl Sagan when you run in to him.

BTW, jaredh, the earliest Porcupine Tree stuff is the best - Voyage 34 and The Sky Moved Sideways are flat out killers. Agreed about Dave G. He always plays one or two perfect notes where most guitarists would play a dozen while looking for the right one. If you haven't heard his slide solo at the end of "High Hopes" from Division Bell, I can't describe it. There are no words, and it makes me tear up every time I hear it. Beauty like that can't be explained, which is why we have music.

10. Division Bell is one of the few Floyd
albums I haven't heard. I'll have to check it out. As far as Porcupine Tree goes, my favorite albums are The Sky Moved Sideways and In Absentia.

5. I spent several glorious evenings in HS getting stoned and
watching "The Wall". Funny thing is, the only scene I vividly remember is the nipple shaving incident :puke:

6. I never listened to much Floyd except for the radio standards
Money, Another Brick in the Wall, and something about a lunatic in the hall.

I used to like The Wall a lot, but now I sorta think it's too dark.

9. Another thing.
One thing that makes me happy is the amount of Pink Floyd t-shirts one sees on adolescents these days. Kids who otherwise have awful taste in music are able to appreciate the beauty of Floyd.

11. Pink Floyd was the first band I actually liked.
Liked it not because the parents liked it or anything like that. When The Wall came out, I was four, and I loved it. My babysitter was playing it and I remember demanding to know what band that was. It was amazing.

I don't play Floyd as much anymore, but that's more due to not wanting to over listen to it. I probably give each album a listen once a year or so.

I'd have to say my favorites are ranked like so:

1) Soundtrack from the Film More (unconventional choice, I know)
2) Meddle
3) Atom Heart Mother
4) Saucerful of Secrets

All so sad.
