7. It's not the end of the world... just the end of this era of the world.
I'm sure it will be a simple purging of everything we know and hold dear, followed by a few million years to evolve intelligent life again. :P

10. Tha "Aztec Calendar" ends in 2012, and this is taken
by some really right religious idiots to mean the world will then end.

Of course, they also thought it would end in 2000.

Some thought it was to have ended in 1900 as well - many folks sold their homes and all posessions, moved to the "wilderness" with their head holy roller to await THE END TIME, which of course didn't happen.
Some of these folks waited for a few years after 1900, in case of miscalculation, but they mostly came back, and I believe some started yet another religios group for those who felt wronged by the leaders of the end times group. I should remember this, but there are so many trus religions, I can't keep them all straight, and they do become tiresome after a while.

Whatever, they all proclaim love and yet hate the competition
And they will all gladly take your money.

No end of the world. The Mayan calendar "ends" on December 21, 2012. However, other Mayan records talk about "the future" after that date, so they didn't think the world was going to end. Some people (me included) believe in "the shift", which will be a change in the way people view spirituality and live their lives. If we take a good look, we can see we're already making the transition. :hi:

14. Well, think of it this way
If we look at the political arena, a certain number of people have woken up since Dubya has been in office. We've got a black man running for president, and the majority is with him (no matter what the MSM says). And women have been taken seriously for the first time (for better or worse, of course--and we know who embodies each of those). Fewer people are buying the bullshit--all the trivial arguments McCain's camp has been flinging have fizzled.

Oh--and here's a good example of politics--here in the 26th district of NY state, we had three people running for the Dem nomination for Congress. John Powers, an Iraq war vet, Jack Davis, a business owner, and some chick named Alice Kryzan, an environmental attorney nobody knew about because the MSM ignored her. For months, Powers and Davis engaged in a slapfest to end all slapfests--TV ads, print ads, direct mailings, all trashing each other. It was ugly. Who won the primary? The longshot--Alice Kryzan. Because she didn't engage in the bullshit, and people NOTICED.

Beyond politics, more people are interested in saving the environment. More people are turning away from oppressive traditional churches and embracing their own spirituality. More people realize the value of helping their neighbors. It's things like that, all taken together, that show the shift. (In addition, the bank collapses have been predicted as part of the shift--traumatic, but necessary to sweep out the old institutions and usher in a new system.)

Now, of course it isn't going to be 100 percent of the population. The fundie freaks and repukes will always be with us. What matters is the people who have woken up and how vocal they are about the new reality.

Do we still have an option to choose "the dark path" of same shit, new year? Of course. We're always walking that razor's edge, and it's always our CHOICE. Nothing is set in stone, nothing is predestined. Personally, I'm doing everything I can to help get us firmly on the better path for a positive future. :hi:

26. Mayans of the Epoch that created this Long Count Calendar...
believed in a cycled existence.

They may have seen their World coming to an end at the end of the day count in 2012 AD.
But, most likely, they would see a New World starting out all over again..on
a new Long Count Calendar.

I believe most people in the United States believe they live a linear existence.

31. I'd say.
Every 4 years there's some goofy crap going on. It's called a US Presidental Election.

Sometimes it makes me think I like the UK election system: the party in power has a 5 year term limit but can call an election at any time, so you get 6-8 weeks of electioneering. Of course the closer to 5 years it gets the more unofficial electioneering is going on.

Mark.

45. Well, I sure wouldn't do any drinking on that day.
If I did that, I'd surely pass out before the thing happened. Naw, I'd secure myself some kickass weed and drink a lot of coffee all day. I'd want to witness the end of the world buzzed and wide awake.

Hell, I'd even probably be wearing 3D glasses just in case.
