An Innocent Man:

And So It Goes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eELB6NxrZ7A

and i argue that when he seems derivative, he does it better than most (here's an example):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYuS7_paGbU

(what i love about this song is that he is copying several artists at once...and what the hell, his piano playing is just cool when added to a rocking song.)

39. Goodnight Saigon brings me to tears
The last time I saw him in concert (last year, I believe), he had a bunch of veterans on stage, singing the chorus with him. I wept the entire time.

after his first 3 albums, Joel had a different sound for each subsequent album.

17. I like most of his stuff.
He is a good songwriter, singer and musician. his songs are intelligent, interesting and somtimes humerous, and some people have found several of them very offensive, which to me is always a plus.

I wish he would get over his alcohol problem and get back to work.

How about we compromise and say he doesn't suck a whole lot.

36. "Miami 2017"
"Miami 2017" from the album, Turnstiles (which also has a LOT of deep cover good stuff--'Angry Young Man' and 'I've Loved These Days').

Never did try to figure out what that particular song meant, but it certainly conjures up some dystopian, post-apocolyptic images in my little brain... :)

33. I like some of what he does, especially the older stuff. "The Stranger"
is a clever song. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jI2BnzF1860

"Honesty" is very touching. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rgmJ1miBzek

"Just the Way You Are" is sweet and honest: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=s_6Wi0aA1IA

I didn't like his big pop era, and some of his songs were too self-absorbed for my taste, but at his best his words had an emotional directness and honesty that was missing from a lot of the music of the 70s and 80s. Hell, it's rare in every era, inside or out of pop music.

42. Off the top of my head...
Goodnight Saigan, Piano Man, We Didn't Start The Fire, Angry Young Man, Big Shot... the list goes on. My musical tastes seem to be rather anathema to my generation...

I also love Weird Al's parody of Piano Man, 'Ode to a Superhero'.

And, fun fact I'm sure everyone but me knew already, Billy Joel is a lifelong Democrat who supports Senator Obama.

great tunes, Zanzibar has some cool jazz vamping in it. Honesty is a great tune too, great melody and changes.

Oh, and his favorite instrument is the Hammond B-3 and he can tear it up on that instrument (but doesn't nearly often enough IMHO) so there's instant cool points with me. :D
