I heard it as a description of my childhood neighborhood first by friends of my friends' parents at social gatherings when I was a teen, then later from coworkers who were afraid to go into my area at all. I was apparently not the stereotypical white trash look and people just ASSumed that I was from a different area.

The only time someone said it to my face knowing full well that I lived there was an odd dude in college who had passed by it on vacation and after I described exactly where it was he said "You mean that white trash neighborhood?" I suggested to him that it wouldn't be smart to describe it that way to anyone from there, including me.

By college I was aware that "white trash" was inherently racist because if it wasn't there'd be no need to qualify trash with a racial designation. I loved to point that out to be who thought it wasn't racist.

The fact that someone would call someone else trash to begin with is pretty nasty, but then to add the color designation makes it clear. It also makes you wonder what they call people of other races when they are looking down their noses at them too. It can't be good.

It sure is a slap in the face to be called white trash when you know you are a decent person who tries to follow the golden rule. You try to treat a person with respect, then to have them call you that, it truly is a slap in the face.

By a snotty-ass girl from school whose family had lots of money. She'd been picking on my little sister (who was only eight at the time) and I'd stepped in tell her to leave my goddamned sister alone, because she was just a little kid. I started to walk away when the little bitch threw a big rock at me and hit me in the back of the head, cutting my scalp open a bit.

So I knocked the hell out of her. Broke her perfect little nose. When her Daddy came knocking on our door, threatening to call the cops or sue, my Mom told him that his precious little angel had been kicking her eight-year-old daughter and had thrown her backpack into a mud puddle, that *I* had only been trying to get her to leave my sister alone, and that HIS daughter had attacked me first with a big rock--in front of about twenty witnesses. She offered to call the cops FOR him.

Let's just say that he left quietly, and that girl never bothered us again.

Years ago the local library wrote me a letter saying that my card would be revoked if I didn't clean the books before I returned them. Then I found out that the children's librarian had been hassling my then 9 year old daughter about a book that was falling to pieces before she ever took it out. I was driving a used Suburban school bus at the time, so I guess they figured we were fair targets. Since then, I've been driving 10 miles to go to the better library in the next county.
