I think I want to get a cat for the Taverner-boy
He needs someone to sleep with - and he actually would take care of a cat.

As long as you tie in whatever he is doing with Tae-Kwon-Do (this is amazing - any DU Parents who are having issues - sign them up today!!!) he will do it.

And he's extremely affectionate. More than me or wifey - and we're pretty touchy-feely.

So I am thinking sweet bed cat - whaddya think?

I admire cats personally btw...

1. would he take care of a dog?
cats are wonderful and independent and easy to care for, but cuddly only when they want to be. and contrary by nature. and they're and prowly at night. something to sleep with and cuddle when a kid wants to cuddle would be a dog. dogs don't mind being substitute pillows.

3. 5 and 2
Taverner-boy is 5, extremely affectionate and wanting 'a warm body' next to him at night.

Taverner-girl couldn't care less.

5. It's our experience at least, cats choose their buddies..
We have 2 cats, brother and sister. The boy, Gizmo chose my wife. He sleeps above her head in bed, he cuddles on her lap in the living room, it's all her.
The girl, Pumpkin, almost stays completely in my daughters room. she will venture out briefly for food and water and to go potty, but that's it.
When we got our dog, my son was really twitching to have a sleeping buddy like Taverner Boy....but oddly enough, without any prompting or anything she chose me to sleep with. I go to bed very early in the evening because of my hours and she's right there beside me in bed, until Mrs. Tripper comes to bed.
I take naps in the afternoon, and again, she's right there.
I suppose it can depend on if you show them where the good spots, I dunno, but ours chose us, despite our intentions, if that makes sense.
I hope you get the young lad a sleeping buddy, it is a comforting thing to have a loyal pet right by your side!

6. Some cats are more affectionate than others
Just like children.
Persians tend to be easier going and, IMHO, less independent than some other breeds. You can find a part Persian at a shelter.

7. You could get an adult cat from the shelter. That way you know what
kinda personality you are getting. Kittens are cute but need alot of affection.

10. FInd a "velcro" cat ---
and you will do just fine. I have three velcro cats -- cats who sleep with me, sit in my lap, want to play, and essentially have made me their pet. They are the best! If you get a cat from s shelter, the staff will know which ones are the velcro cats. Also, have your son do the feeding and grooming of the cat, that way they will be more likely to bond.
