Songs that Remind you Of (are about) Where You Grew Up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyStwRYLzlI

For me it's American Girl by Tom Petty

Well she was an american girl
Raised on promises
She couldnt help thinkin that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, an d if she had to die
Tryin she had one little promise
She was gonna keep

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl

It was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
She could the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin in the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God its so painful
Something thats so close
And still so far out of reach

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an american girl

Always reminds me of growing-up near Gainesville, FL

1. This reminds me of the school where I was never cool
Even though I do remember seeing Ben Folds at a talent show there back in 1984

2. "Downtown" by Petula Clark
Always reminds me of going to downtown Detroit with my parents, usually to the big Hudson's store, or, to the parade on Thanksgiving.

10. San Francisco songs!
...When I lived in England in the 70s, I was never homesick--mostly cuz if you were the music fan I was, you got to see everyone who was anyone in concert in London. But one time I was listening to the radio, and they played "Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison.

"...and when that fog horn whistle blows, I can hear it--I don't have to fear it...."

I swear, I just lost it, started bawling as a whole sensual memory hit me like a baseball (cricket?) bat. I could feel the moist, cool air, smell the ocean, taste the crusty sourdough. I knew then if I ever came back to the US, I would never live anywhere else but here.

Even now when I hear "Into the Mystic" I find myself tearing up. But that's what good music is supposed to do: Evoke your raw emotions.

7. Rocky Mountain High by John Denver
I'm from Durango, Colorado.

My parents were big John Denver fans back in the 1970's when we lived in Colorado (their song is "Annie's Song"). My childhood soundtrack will forever be John Denver songs.

8. This is the one song that really reminds me of home.

And this is the song that explains why I left. Just replace Tennessee with North Carolina.

9. Talkin' 'bout Mill Valley, California, that's my home
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-YaWE0zu-c

Mill Valley

by Rita Abrams

I'm gonna talk about a place
That's got a hold on me,
Mill Valley
A little place where life
Feels very fine and free,
Mill Valley
Where people aren't afraid to smile
And stop and talk with you awhile,
And you can be as friendly
As you want to be.
Mill Valley!
Talkin' 'bout Mill Valley,
That's my home!
It looks as pretty in the rain
As in the sun,
Mill Valley
And there's a mountain
That belongs to ev'ry one,
Mill Valley
And there are creeks
That run on endlessly,
And trees as far as you can see
It makes you feel as if
Your life has just begun.
Mill Valley
Talkin' 'bout Mill Valley,
Talkin' 'bout Mill Valley, California,
That's my home!
I know that there may come a time
I'll have to leave Mill Valley,
And ev'ry memory
Will seem like make-believe Mill Valley
And all the good things
That are mine right now,
Will call to me and ask me how
I could have left them all behind
How could I leave Mill Valley,
Talkin' 'bout Mill Valley,
Talkin' 'bout Mill Valley, California,
That's my home!

11. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere by Neil Young
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_oZpDYdvDk

I think I'd like to go back home
And take it easy
There's a woman that I'd like to get to know
Livin' there

Everybody seems to wonder
What it's like down here
You gotta get away from this day to day running around
Everybody knows this is nowhere

Every time I think about back home
It's cool and breezy
I wish that I could be there right now
Just passing time

Everybody seems to wonder
What it's like down here
You gotta get away from this day to day running around
Everybody knows this is nowhere
