4. I loved season 2 as well, but yeah, I wish they had gone the direction that Lynch wanted.

11. Not to threadjack, but Cooper has the reputation for being a straight arrow
that I don't think is 100% justified.

Lynch should have won that battle.

16. don't know if I can spoil a show that old
but the Shadow War was resolved in the fourth season. Earth was liberated at the end of the fourth season. The fifth and final season concerned itself with the aftermath.

17. Hill Street Blues (prior to it sucking)
Homicide-Life on the Streets rocked the house when Ned Beatty was on board. It did nothing to portend Belzer sucking so hard on that terrible law and Order, the one with the dumb one-dimensional jock and the Palin-type bad actress who ripped off Dr Green on ER .SVU. God that is unwatchable.

18. The Defenders--a real oldie that I can't believe isn't on DVD!
Also East Side/West Side and Naked City, three shows from the early 1960s socially realistic drama phase of television.

Homicide: Life on the Streets, a cop show a cut above the rest, with characters who had real lives and real moral dilemmas, not just good guys and bad guys

31. MI-5/Spooks
A spy series from the UK, but one like you've never seen before. It is permeated with a John Le Carré-style cynicism about their mission and government and complicated by the characters' personal lives and professional rivalries. Unlike the typical American series, where you can be pretty sure that everything will turn out all right and the main characters will have close calls but escape unscathed, MI-5 is not afraid to kill off main characters, have the bad guys win, or have the good guys do things that are morally iffy or go over to the dark side.

The fourth and fifth seasons move well beyond the standard spy plots into darker, edgier territory, not in the sense of more sex or violence, but in the sense of dealing with things you've not supposed to talk about in the American media--the CIA grabbing citizens of other countries, leaders of business and government plotting a fascist takeover, black ops, attempts to overthrow a foreign government, government agencies sabotaging one another, and false flag operations.

Throughout, the characters are multi-dimensional and complex. They care about one another but don't always trust one another. Being part of the cast has its revolving door aspects, but as the original cast leaves one by one, they are replaced by equally strong characters.

This is really one of my favorite series of all time. Five seasons are out on DVD, with a sixth season due out in January.

40. !
Guess I'll have to watch past the first season. I never made it past the woman getting her face pushed into a fry vat. Seemed like typical misogynistic, Islamophobic pap to me, but your recommendation means a lot!

46. It's more subtle than that
Yes, they have some Islamic terrorists to deal with, but note that in the first episode, the enemy is an American anti-choice fanatic. They're not "24"--they have a lot of different plots to unravel.

Go ahead, laugh if you must, but during the time that show was on, my mom first started getting sick. It often brought me comfort, and made me less scared about my mom.
