My boss decided to tell me today
that I need to have telecom budgets for 2009 prepared by Monday morning for 45 Subsidary offices, with summaries and note cards, so the Vice President can do a presentation Monday Afternoon. So now I have to work all day tomorrow.

Worse, I have spent the last 6 months on the organizing committee for the NYC Wizard Rock Festival. It is 9 hours, 16 band of fantasy and magic inspired rock and blues. It is Sunday, and if I can't finish cruching these numbers and drafting these summaries and notes tomorrow then I have to miss the Festival and work on Sunday too.

:grr:

Why the hell couldn't they give me some advanced notice and more time to work on this? At least a week would have been nice.

Why the hell couldn't my boss be doing some of this?

Why the hell does it have to be This weekend?

:nuke:

7. Yes, he's aware.
But his attitude is that it's my fault if I'm out of the office. I should find a way to be there every day so I have more time for these surprises. x(

He owns the consulting firm, so he's apparently allowed to believe this evil shit.

Hopefully I'll knock off some good numbers in record time tomorrow. :)

going on. The numbers will get more accurate next week when I have more time to work on them in more detail. :)

12. If I was nearby I'd help you with yours if you could help me with mine.
Having another set of eyes and hands would help me a lot, even if you don't know the work itself. Just helping to keep it organized is a huge help.

Is your homework something I can help you with?

14. Nope. We just have to give the neighborhood advance warning
that a high concentration of geeks that will be invading the area. The publicity pretty much handled that. :)

We have lots of costumes and a photographer available for people who want to dress up and have photos taken as wizards and witches. We also have artists there drawing "Dark Marks" on people's arms for the people who like to think of themselves as evil.

I'm not evil. I'm a Hufflepuff. :P

11. Couldn't the Vice President
Do some of this work him/herself, if the presentation depends on it? It sounds like too much to do by yourself at such short notice. Can you ask for more time, considering you just got out of the hospital? I don't normally suggest playing the sympathy card, but if it keeps you from working yourself to death...

Anyway, here's a hug.

17. The VP can't wipe his own ass without an assistant.
His only skill is bullshitting the people above him who have no real clues about IT and Telecom. He sure as hell doesn't know much about IT, and nothing about Telecom.

There is no way in hell he could write a budget on his own, and he won't be able to present about it without a lot of coaching. My boss will definitely be helping with the coaching.

There is no way to ask for more time. Our client company is owned by a huge multinational corporation based out of London. They set a deadline, and it can't be changed. What is most aggravating about this is that the VP and my boss probably knew about this deadline two months ago, but for some reason they waiting until today to spring this on me.

x(

Thank you very much for the hug. I'm definitely going to need that tomorrow.

16. That sucks, but...
At least you didn't have to suffer through any major medical crises lately...

Any boss that springs a full day's work on you with less than a full day's notice is an asshole.

21. If he wanted this done really well then this is a week's worth of work.
I worked on it all day today, and I'll work on it all day tomorrow (and maybe Sunday too). Cramming all of this into 2 or 3 days, he'll have to deal with whatever I can throw together and the VP will have to bullshit the rest.

My boss has a lot of empathy for my health issues. It's only enough to keep my job secure no matter what is going on. It's not enough to go easy on me, ever. Especially when the parent company is making demands I get all kinds of demands piled deep on my desk with little notice, no guidance, and no support. I'm a high level consultant. I'm supposed to be able to take it and handle it, and so far I always do. There is a lot of good, but just as much bad with this job. :(

That Wizard Rock festival sounds like something worth attending. (I'm going to a concert on Sunday myself, in an odd coincidence.)

Any chance you can tell them: "Look, you dropped this on me with no warning, and I've got a prior commitment I've been organizing for SIX MONTHS on Sunday. I'll work my ass off Saturday to CYA, but I can only put in a few hours, if any at all, on Sunday. Your lack of preparation is not my fault. You should have had this on my desk a week ago, or by Wednesday at the latest."

Or are they the sort who wouldn't take responsibility for their own mistakes in a million years?

28. There is nothing I could tell them to make it okay
to not prepare the budget numbers for a presentation to the client's parent company. Even though I was given short notice, thats' no excuse. Even though I had prior plans, that's no excuse.

This is one of those things that Just Has To Be Done On Time, even if it means pulling all-nighters between now and Monday.
