1. 19 miles each way
It's too far really, but I do like many things about living where I do in Bedford. Being one hour on the train from London (less on the fast train) and five minutes walk from the station is a Good Thing. And being walking distance from the town centre is good too.

You go to London often?

You have kids / family at home or other distractions? I'd love to work at home but think it'd be hard at times.

33. Well, I have five computers, four printers (including the big honkin' proofer, which is
four feet wide and two feet deep), and two scanners, plus the Kaiser copystand/lights outfit and the GBC binding machine...all that ain't gonna fit in the bathroom.

Though, in our old house, I did manage to run the business for five years in an eight-by-eight-foot room (but it did have a large closet).

8. I live so close to my workplaces that I wouldn't consider it a commute.
I work at two locations for the same company, one a mile and a half or so from my house and the other about four miles from my house.

I don't work every day, but when I do, I try to go to both places in one day, going to the further one first and the other one on my way home.

Occasionally, I do some work from home (paperwork, reports, scheduling).

9. About 3 miles
But since we have public transit over here, it's a 5-6 minute walk to the metro station, unless I catch the bus down the hill (bus stops right in front of my building, a one-minute ride). Then a 12-minute metro ride, then another 3-4 minutes from the metro station to my building. That last stretch is indoors, since my building is on the underground city network.

I really love not having to get up at o'dark thirty to go to work. :)

When I do go in, it's 50 miles round trip. I'm averaging once per week right now.

I travel to three different schools. The nearest is 2 miles and the furthest is about 9 miles.

Country roads, no traffic. I can get to the near one in about 5 minutes! :)

but the bigger question is:
How LONG does it take you to get there? For me, it's 45 minutes. Ten years ago, it took me half an hour.

He flies up on Monday AM, back Thursday PM. Works four 9 hour days and a half day at the local office on Friday. Been doing it for several years, and doesn't mind. Frequent flier miles took us to Europe this summer with hotel free too, so while it isn't always easy, it has its plusses.

I go down to the kitchen, make tea, watch the weather and horrible Philadelphia commuter traffic, and go back to bed.

I'm retired.

40. 2 1/2 to 3 miles
1 hour walk. Sometimes I drive or catch the bus. Old car, gas-hog. Can't really walk in the winter, it's too dark to be safe and there's no sidewalk for pedestrians.

I used to live in the building I worked in years ago. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing! I think I came to work in my slippers out of th elevator more than once ; )

distance can be deceptive. After all someone living in NYC could take over an hour to travel 10 -15 miles, while a highway commute of that same distance could be covered in about 15 minutes.

Edited on Mon Sep-22-08 08:53 AM by annonymous
I live in the city and work in the suburbs. There is no direct route from my house to my job. In order to take public transportation I would have to take 3 buses and over an hour to get to work. Driving to work only takes 35 minutes.
