Are guitar solos BETTER or WORSE with GUITAR FACE?

Sorry in advance... I find Dave Matthews to be synonymous with "wanker."

1. I like it if it's natural and not cliche. Matthews is, of course, totally cliche.

Because he is, as you say, a wanker. Along with so many others, who aren't having natural facial movements, but are studiously duplicating the gestures of other guitarists in order to be taken more seriously, because, to an intelligent person, the music isn't good enough to take them seriously as a guitarist.

Cf. also all diva pop stars, who have no talent, and so spend so much time practicing to LOOK like a musician. And a whore, too. But that's outside of the paradigm of the question at hand.

Gilmour, however, is all natural facial gestures. Hendrix, Alex Lifeson, Jimmy Page, Steve Howe, Fripp, Zappa, Belew, Vai, and so on - all natural. And also not overdone. Except maybe Hendrix, but then, Hendrix is JIMI FUCKIBNG HENDRIX and so can do what he wants.

Generally, the more serious and actually talented a musician, the less superficially showy they feel the need to be.

Gilmour, Hendrix, Lifeson, Page, Howe, Fripp, Zappa, Belew, Vai...there's a balance of virtuosity with a smidgen of "face."

Music should come first, and for the players you've listed, it does.

7. There are many, many guitar faces.

Every once in a while, I became aware that I was contorting my face when playing, and had to force myself to relax. I suspect that this is common, and ought to be considered separately from those carefully-rehearsed expressions of pain we see on drama kings/queen players.

He just stood there playing his ass off, and looking like he was watching the show via satellite relay. On a bad screen. :P
