Now I know just how painful an abscess can be.
I got one on my back a little over a week ago, and at first it was painless, only a bit itchy. (Naturally, it took root at that precise spot on the shoulder blade where it's JUST out of reach no matter what you do.) Annoying as hell.

My sister (a nurse) kept it in hand (so to speak), but over the past couple days it began taking on a life of its own. Last night I couldn't even lie down to sleep because it felt very much like I imagine a knife in the back would feel.

So today I broke down and went to the E. R. and had it cut open and surgically drained. It still hurts like a mofo, but at least they gave me some Tylenol 3, and they kick ass! I may be able to sleep tonight, but it'll be a couple days before my arm works properly- yep, it hurts that bad.

At least I can now totally relate to ThomCat and his recent adventure.

1. My dear Prisoner_Number_Six!
Oooh, sweetie...

I noticed that you were among the missing, so to speak...

I'm sorry you had to endure all that, but hopefully you will soon be past the pain and all the rest.

Here's to peaceful sleeping tonight, and all future nights...

5. I've been concentrating on other things for a while
I still check in from time to time (I did read your new poem the other night, but was distracted before I had a chance to comment on it) but for the most part I've been taking a break from DU.

Reality happens.

2. I had one in my armpit once...
Taking on a life of its own is rather an understatement.

4. I had a staph infection in my armpit when I was in 9th grade. It looked like a
DD boob. It was wicked crazy itchy and painful all at once. Doc drained that sucker and then showed me what he took out of it. "See that large pencil eraser size cylinder? That hard core is what makes a staph infection different from a boil."

Very educational to say the least. :P

10. Yes, they are horrible
I had one in a location I don't care to discuss this time last year. I was pregnant at the time which made it that much worse, I think. Heavy antibiotics for a month, a surgical drainage in the ER, and daily packing for 2 months. It was the pits. I feel your pain!
