You'd think with all the cigarette butts, it would have sparked up somehow. Especially the ones that were by the couch.

13. Not necessarily
Perfectly sane people can do that kind of stuff. I used to have a room mate back when I was suffering from the symptoms of my illness whose room looked something like those pics in the OP. And he was the sane one. I would not tolerate it elsewhere in the place. I ended up having to kick him out and he would not clear out his room. I had to clean it out and I put his belongings out on the front porch.

He never lets anyone come in, but once on a welfare check I had to go through the house, and it looks EXACTLY like that (sans cigarettes). That was 3 years ago. The city has fined him several times, but there isn't really anything anyone can do. He won't take anyone up on an offer to help clean the place.

Certain kinds of fungus can do real damage to your lungs. Not to mention lice and bedbugs and roaches and other nasties that love places like this. This person must be a picture of health- smoking, eating crap, living in filth. And I'm not sure I want to know, but where do they go to the bathroom? The toilet seems otherwise occupied.

43. My father's house looked like this before it was condemned
My father suffered from vascular dementia and his personal hygiene as well as his house showed signs of marked deterioration. The house had no heat or working plumbing, the roof leaked, the steps were broken. My brother took pictures and mailed them to the city housing inspector who then condemned the house and sent my father off to the hospital for psychiatric examination. He was declared incompetent and spend his last years in an assisted living facility. I wouldn't be surprised if the person who lived in this situation was also sent to the hospital for pyschiatric evaluation.

60. I've known two people who had apartments like this.
And they were both wonderful people. Maybe they both had depression. They didn't invite you in, but that didn't seem strange, as I mostly ran into them in the neighborhood and walking the dog.

One of them asked me to take care of her dog when she went out of town, and she left me her keys. When I went in, I was in total shock. It was much worse than these pictures. It was years and years of stuff being piled up to the ceiling. You could actually see where there was still nice furniture somewhere underneath. There were dead plants, old newspapers, jars, and just tons of things not worth saving- at least by my standards.

There was a path from the back door to the couch where she slept. The bedroom was full and you couldn't even get into it. The bathroom - well there was a television on the toilet. There was so much stuff in front of the front door that it couldn't be used as an exit or entrance. And since it was a third floor apartment and there was a window open, there were squirrels coming and going from a nearby tree. And it smelled horrible in the apartment. I couldn't find the dog's water bowl.

I took her dog back with me to my apartment and never went back. When she came back she was embarrassed that I had seen the place, but she did not understand why I kept her dog with me. I just told her it was easier for me.

I grew up in a house not unlike that. Not quite that bad... maybe worse in ways... I don't know. It's hard to have perspective about it.

It hurts to see it, and to read some of the comments that invariably pop up about it. (Didn't read this thread, so I don't mean here...)

71. My grandma's house looked like that.
Best of all she had hundreds of dollars hidden in styrofoam fast food boxes... but there were also half eaten dinners and cigarette butts too.

Cleaning up the mess was like a treasure hunt!

The weirdest thing? Not lots of bugs. I think the cigarette smoke killed them. Eventually that's what killed my grandma too.
