I have lived in Northern California and Atlanta, and the road system in Atlanta are absolutely horrendous. People get lost all the time in Atlanta and this causes wrecks and long commutes. I would definitely not come to this city for the first time without a damn good map.

J/K, although I do have many MANY addictions.

First and foremost, I MUST have my Zoloft. Since I went on it, my doctor has taken his own sweet time filling the prescription when it runs out on several occasions.

I have had several incidents of SEVERE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSRI_discontinuation_syndrome">SSRI Withdrawal Syndrome . Some people have said it is akin to kicking heroin. It is that severe. Your body hurts. You get what they call http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_zaps#.22Brain_zaps.22_and_.22electric_shock_sensations.22">"Zoloft Zaps." It really puts you through the ringer physically as well as mentally.

I have tons of other addictions as well, but that one is the worst of them all. I had no idea what I was getting into when my doctor prescribed them to me, but I don't really care either. They are the first and only anti depressant that has ever worked for me. I still have bad days and I still get heartbroken sometimes, but on a day to day basis, it IS better.

I also absolutely feel like I NEED a glass of Dr Pepper when I first wake up and some chocolate milk about an hour later, if I go out in public. I have some pretty extreme anxiety/full on panic attacks and the milk does help with the nausea.

I'm a smoker. I know. I know, it's bad for me, but it's not like any of the patches or gum are going to replace something to do with my hands when I get those strong urges to choke the living shit out of some jerk who desperately deserves it for being an Anal Retentive Grade A Certifiable Nutbag™©®. I seem to meet up with a lot of those types of people in real life. After all, I live in a red state. Need I say more?

I like to drink as well, although I do not get to do that as much as I would like to.

I also miss Mary Jane to the extreme.

I'm addicted to Mobsters right now as well. So, add video games to the list.

...

Ah, Jeez, if there is something that anyone can possibly be addicted to and I've tried it, I'm addicted. That's much easier than listing all this separately.

28. Going by the loosest possible definition of "addiction," I'd have to list:
music
beer
Mary Jane
fast food
sweets/junk in general (total sugarholic)
caffeine (not an everyday coffee drinker, more like 3 days a week, but I treat it like an actual drug to get high off of)
random 'Net surfing

42. In a jocular sense.
I'm an atheist, dedicated to the separation of church and state.

I have some minor credentials in the rehabilitation community. As such, I have noted that attempts to curb addictions frequently result in a dependency on the evangelical experience. In fact, I've also proposed that Christian zealots display the same sets of behaviors noticeable in other addictions, with the caveat that the fundamentalist community "supports" their addictions artificially to spread the impact and mask the appearance of the illness.

Much as athletic devotees "rush" from the dopamine of their exertions, Christ-addicts crave the effects of "religious ecstasy.

I believe that evangelicals purposely have insinuated themselves into traditional rehabilitation efforts in order to proselytize and spread their ranks.

If I wasn't such a cynical and lazy bastard, I'd probably do the research and publish on the matter, but just can't push myself to give a rat's ass.

Primarily because, in the present political climate, such research would not generate funding, much less be accepted by peer review.

Not attacking at all, actually. Merely an observation.

Unusual for me. I make no excuses for my impatience with Christianity in general, but I am trying to moderate my arrogance.

In this instance though I'm trying hard *not* to be contentious to avoid my post being disregarded as mere bias.

44. Wow.

I have often had that same thought, but you put it much more eloquently than I could have.

I don't mean to knock other's religion as I am principally an agnostic, but I have seen too many people who, as you said, become obsessed/consumed/controlled by their religion in the same way that a meth addict does, to the point of becoming extreme and irrational.

I really, really hope you do find the energy and motivation to publish on that theory; I think it is critically important to our overall social development. And I think you would be pleasantly surprised to discover how much support (financial and otherwise) you would receive.

47. Thanks for your kind reply.
I was trying consciously not to be too inclusive in my generalization.

A contentious post attacking Christians would have defeated my purpose, and would have been false. I chose 'Christians' as my target to lampoon because it's what I'm familiar with and the extreme variety is well known to the community. I'm sure it applies in many cases of excessive faith in other religions as well.

I was active in the field for many years and keep somewhat current with the literature. I found that as time progressed I lost faith in "rehabilitation"; almost invariably healing is merely a switch in addictions.

I hope I'm not misunderstood. In many cases the transfer is very beneficial and the client is much better off. In my efforts to manage my clients into a healthy outlet, I found that the messenger is often the victim of established doctrine. There's an emotional need to be "cured", even while the maxim that cure is impossible is mandated by rote. The suggestion that addictions can only be transferred rather than "controlled" is blasphemy. I was isolated.

Perhaps my observations are flawed. I'm not so arrogant that I feel wronged; I wasn't able to make my case, is all.

I have other pursuits now.
