Never been to Maine - any suggestions for must-dos? |
|
or must-eat places?
We'll be near Wicasset and Rockland on the South-Central Coast (I think) Leaving Saturday
A kind DU person from the Maine Board suggested Castine, so that's on the list.
My mother suggested Bar Harbor, (her family is from PEI, and some ended up as shopkeepers in Bar Harbor) so even though it's a hike, we'll probably be taking a day trip there as well (but no further north than that).
Also, will probably be stopping for dinner on the way north - any suggestions for somewhere right off 95 north of Boston?

1. York is beautiful. You have to see the Nubble Light House. |
|
Great, great seafood all the way up from Boston to ME. I ate so much lobster one year, I got a rash. (McDonald's even serves Lobster Rolls)

6. Absolutely. Try to spend more than one day... |
|
if you can. Certainly Otter Cliffs. Also recommend Jordon Pond Tea House, Pretty Marsh for a sunset picnic dinner, Naturalist boat cruise, if they still have them this time of year, Cadillac Mountain, and much more.

4. Bailey Island is great, especially the gift shop at Lands End |
|
For dinner I recommend Warren's Lobster House in Kittery; off route 1A just across the bridge from Portsmouth, NH. It's not just north of Boston but it's not that much farther. And the food is terrific.
Also in Maine, you can't pass up LL Bean, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Nubble Point Light in York is very cool too; if you can take Route 1A out of Kittery and up the coast, beautiful little villages and gorgeous scenery.

7. LL Bean is on the list. |
|
And Portsmouth sounds like a good place to stop on the drive up
I'll have to print out this thread and bring it with us. It also looks like I'm going to have to splurge on a guidebook!

8. Tons of good food on route 1, from Portland to Camden. |
|
Why not stop in Wiscasset and get some fantastic fried clams or boiled lobster and eat it by the river?
Portland is rapidly becoming a world class foodie destination, so tons of restaurants, with some very big-wig chefs there.
Honestly, just wander around. You'll find things to do.
Enjoy your stay!

9. I figured if we have an actual DESTINATION it will keep my SO |
|
out of Wendy's or McDonald's! Plus it will give us an interim goal, which will help break up the long drive from Philadelphia to Rockland.

11. If you don't want to drive over to Acadia, go to the Camden Hills State Park. |
|
There are short hikes that reward you with wonderful views of the ocean and coast. Acadia is a much grander scale of the same with lots of other sites, but a day trip there wouldn't allow much time to explore. An overnight would be much better. Camden on the other hand is just down the road in comparison.
Eating right off 95 north of Boston? Target Newburyport or stay on the road to Portsmouth, NH because each has a quaint downtown and plenty of easy dining choices.
