3. Tell me about Chrome ... cuz I have a Mac
I'm not too eager to try an unofficial port of windows tech to a mac environs, so I'm simply not gonna be able to try Chrome for several months

I've primarily used Safari and Firefox in recent years, though I've just started playing around with Devon and Opera: Devon mainly for the search utility, Opera just to try it. I like being able to set page preferences for individual tabs in Opera; the spedd dial isn't as useful as I'd expected.

So what recommends Chrome?

4. I love it. It's very fast,
the address bar is your Google toolbar, you can highlight text and right click to search in a new tab and it just has a good "feel" to it, IMHO.

But "out-of-the-box" it's pretty powerful and VERY fast. I like it. It's slick.

2. I use Firefox for regular browsing.
I use Netscape 7.2 sometimes just because I miss it.
I use IE when I'm working on my myspace page (which is in shambles right now on purpose) and when I'm adding an APP to myspace, because it actually lets me scroll down to click the button. The others do not. I have 800 x 600 screen resolution. That's why.

I miss Netscape Gold. I wish someone would make Firefox 3.whateverI'musingrightnow look like Netscape Gold.

7. Not with 800 x 600 resolution.
It's only for adding apps in myspace. In Mozilla based browsers, adding apps with 800 x 600 screen resolution in Myspace doesn't scroll down far enough to click the button. Everything else works fine though. I use a recliner as a computer chair, so I keep the 800 x 600 screen resolution to help me see better.

8. try seamonkey.
Best of both worlds between Netscape and Firefox. It's all I use on ALL my computers - Mac/Windows/FreeBSD

If you liked Netscape you'll LOVE Seamonkey. (formally Netscape/Mozilla prior to Firefox)

17. Have you tried SeaMonkey?
It's a Mozilla release, though not quite as popular as Firefox. Browser & email client combined. Pretty much like the old Netscape browser.

20. Hmmm....
I just woke up and here you are making me think....:D

It has an integrated email client (if you choose - you can install the browser only) and having everything integrated uses less memory than running a separate browser and email client. It's fast. Like Firefox it has a ton of extensions. My favorite extension is Ad-Block. I haven't seen an ad in years. It's super customizable - both by tweaking the preferences and by "hacking". I've used Netscape since the WAY back and so it feels very comfortable for me. Blocks pop-ups. I have mine set so that any link I click from inside a page opens up in a new tab within the same window. It's stable.

Of course, I have my favorite settings and tweaks that I perform immediately after an install, so your default install and my custom one may be two different beasts, but then that's one of the draws. How customizable it is.

39. Was just reading up on SeaMonkey 2.0 (in development right now)
Apparently this version will be based more on the Firefox toolkit than the old Mozilla/Netscape structure of the current SeaMonkey. Good news for those of us who use both Firefox and Thunderbird currently, but would use an integrated suite if it "looked like" Firefox.

Opera. Since it first came out and fit on one floppy disk.
I liked it so much I happily paid for it.

I'll use firefox occasionally, and when I'm using a Windows machine Chrome is really growing on me.

15. 5 installed on this PC:
IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Chrome.

Firefox gets the most use, Safari tends to be #2 for me. My wife likes IE still... my son uses whatever we give him. Opera's there for using but I generally don't, likewise I got Chrome on the machine and tried it but there's something wrong with the Flash on it I can't figure out.

27. OK. I've just taken a quick look at Camino, and I have a question:
will Camino let me turn off image loading?

I've looked at Preferences and glanced over the dropdown menus; I've looked at their web help; and I can't can't find it. Of course, I might just be old and blind ...

36. Found the answer: it can be done as a hidden preference and requires a file edit
Disable image loading

People using a dialup internet connection might not want images to load due to the costs. To stop images from loading, add the following code to your user.js file:

user_pref("permissions.default.image", 2);

Note that more options are available: 1=accept all images, 2=block all images, 3=block images from third party hosts.

Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 02:47 PM by jasonc
I dont know, I never try to do those things. I never found a use for re-arranging tabs, or any of the other things other browsers do. I simply use them to browse.

I also do not think it does image blocking, but try here: http://pimpmycamino.com/ and see if there is anything there that will help.

34. Thanx for the link! Checking it out now

As far as tab rearrangement, you give a perfectly sensible response. But here's why such a feature can be useful to me: I sometimes follow news stories in depth. I may have fifteen or twenty tabs open. Many browsers seem to open new tabs at the far right. It's sometimes helpful to sort the tabs somewhat, to compare (say) different edits from the same author more easily

29. Did IE ever add tabbed browsing? The last I looked (and it's been a while)
the only way to get tabbed was via a plug-in that had some security issues

Nitwit that I am, I used IE for years: dozens of windows open, popups everywhere

Really do yourself a favor and try Firefox. I downloaded 2.0.0.something on dialup several years ago and was overjoyed: everything in tabs and I could block annoying pop-ups

I've got 3.0.1 on a Mac and haven't had problems, but I've seen irate comments in this forum that the penultimate Firefox was better than the latest version. In any case, the older 2.0.0.whatever on my ancient PC has been a real workhorse; I've never had any problems with it, and Mozilla will continue to maintain 2.0.0.thingy until December

But lately, I'm finding more sites that won't work and have to jump over to Firefox for them.
