Late 70s, Early 80s New Wave/Post-Punk Appreciation Thread!
I'm kind of sick of politics at the moment.

Let's stroll down memory lane, to the days of skinny ties...

Post your favorite clips of New Wavey or Poppy Punky songs that were such a huge part of the soundtrack of the late 1970s and the early 80s.

No disco, please. :-)

87. I absolutely, 100% adore The Cars.
Candy-O is my favorite album of all time, ever.

Candy-O, I need you so, could you help me in?

This was taped at the Summit (now Lakewood Church) in Houston in 1984 - I was in the audience...great show.

R.I.P. Ben Orr. :(

27. I figured that out the first time I saw Geoff on TV with Dr. Death
They had the same hairdo and the same last name, so one of my friends said "Hey ain't that the dude from The Knack"? I said "no, but I think it's his brother." I was only half serious, but it turned out to be true.

37. Yep....
link:
Geldof wrote the song after reading a telex report on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children playing in a school playground across the street from her home in San Diego, California. She killed two adults and injured eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays."<1> The song was first performed less than a month later at the Fox Theatre, San Diego.<2>

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvzUEM0wFVk

actual lyrics:

Here come Dick, he's wearing a skirt
Here comes Jane, y'know she's sporting a chain
Same hair, revolution
Same build, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss

And they love each other so
Androgynous
Closer than you know, love each other so
Androgynous

Don't get him wrong and don't get him mad
He might be a father, but he sure ain't a dad
And she don't need advice that'll center her
She's happy with the way she looks
She's happy with her gender

Mirror image, see no damage
See no evil at all
Kewpie dolls and urine stalls
Will be laughed at
The way you're laughed at now

Now, something meets Boy, and something meets Girl
They both look the same
They're overjoyed in this world
Same hair, revolution
Unisex, evolution
Tomorrow who's gonna fuss
And tomorrow Dick is wearing pants
And tomorrow Janie's wearing a dress
Future outcasts and they don't last
And today, the people dress the way that they please
The way they tried to do in the last centuries

142. Oh man... I love, love, love this song!!
I haven't heard it in years, and had forgotten all about it.

When I was in high school, I used to listen to a radio station out of Ottawa, Ontario; they played this song all the time.

Thanks a million for posting this.

And just for kicks, even though I'm a straight metaler, here's my favorite New Wave songs:

"True" by Spandau Ballet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poo2-Zqkz74

"99 Luft Balons" by Nena: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQYQTFudrqc

"Don't You Want Me?" by The Human League: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQYQTFudrqc

"It's My Life" by Talk Talk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvAVJTQeFiQ&feature=related

I know, I know. It's all pretty mersh. Early MTV stuff. But hey, I had to watch SOMETHING while I was waiting for Headbanger's Ball, right? I mean, we didn't have the interwebs yet.

I didn't say it, cuz I didn't want to sound all Charlton Heston on you.

IF IT'S TOO LOUD, YOU'RE TOO OLD!

My workout music playlist on my iPod is all 80s metal and hard rock: Dio, Priest, Scorps, Fastway, Ratt, Crue, Sabbath, Ozzy, Cinderella, (old) Def Leppard, Dokken, HSAS, Krokus, Queensryche, Triumph, etc.

It sounds like we need a cheesy 80s metal thread!

I remember the local fm rock station used to play her all the time back then. The good old days before Clear Channel when along with the standards like Skynyrd and Zeppelin and ZZ Top you would also hear cool new music like her, Go Go's, Public Image Ltd and other stuff. Now even the college stations and independent stations seem to be heavily formatted. They may play a larger variety but it's set up so the punk songs are this hour, reggae the next, new wave later, etc. I miss the old free form type stations.

Got to interview him for my university paper. He was an exhausted but gracious and articulate man. As the singer for Ultravox and as a solo performer, he broke a lot of ground.
