Hi all. Unfortunately, I work for a large retail chain (not that one...), and the policy is that you have to submit a request for time off, and it has to be approved. I want to take Nov. 4th off; spend the day helping people get to polls, watch coverage, things like that. It's all very fun for me. :) My question is, can they tell me that's not a good enough reason to want a day off? Has anyone else been denied? I want to know beforehand whether I can be honest about it, or if I have to say a friend is visiting or something. Thanks guys.
(I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place...clearly I'm very new around here and I wasn't sure where else to put it.)

1. Why do they need to know what you want the day off for? |
|
If you have vacation days, you can use 'em for whatever you fuckin' want.

3. Vacation days...ah, that would be nice. |
|
Sadly I haven't worked there long enough to accrue any.

2. I've never had a problem, but I'm usually a poll woker. |

If you have an organization you'll be volunteering with, that looks more impressive than something you're doing on our own.

4. You want to be careful about mixing politics and work. |

I'm not sure why you should have to give a reason at all to use time off that you've earned, but if you really must, "helping friends" is honest enough.

5. Yes, I think you're right. |
|
I'm just too honest for my own good. ;) But I suppose you're right, there's no reason they have to know exactly what I'm up to.

7. We have to fill out forms too. |
|
We have vacation days which can be denied if the schedule is full but we also have other days that we can use anytime and the manager can't deny it. I wouldn't tell them why I want the day off. We don't have to have a reason, its just to let them know what we want the day off.

Take the day off. Offer "personal reasons". That way they can't catch you in a fib later.
