14. Every town has got a place...
...where phony hippies meet
psychodelic dungeons cropping up on every street

Come to San Francisco.

8. Best city on the mainland
perhaps because Hawai'i people were among the first to help build it, back in the Gold Rush days?

Climate got you down? What are you doing West of Twin Peaks, anyway? That's the least progressive as well as the foggiest section. The Mission District and adjacent Noe Valley are the sunniest (no dummies, those padres: that's why they put the mission there!); Mission was once a hotbed of progressives until the dot-commers glommed on to it.

A city in California -- with decent transportation?! Can't hate that a bit!

9. I used to love the place
but, man, it has gotten so crowded. Even years ago it used to take hours to get out of town on a weekend. Too many people.

10. Food!
They say if you went to a different restaurant every night, it would take over 11 years to hit them all.

13. And you'd have trouble finding a bad one...
The one time I went to SF (July of 1997) I found it impossible to find bad food anywhere.

12. Oh, man
I used to live in a wonderful apartment in the Twin Peaks/Noe Valley area. We had a view of the whole city and the Bay, and we'd sit on our balcony and watch the fog roll in every night with a glass of wine in our hands...Rent was cheap, then, and I was young. *Sigh*

15. The food, Golden Gate Park, the history...
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 06:27 PM by earthsea wizard
the clang of the cable cars, proximity to Berkeley, sunsets, the old bath house ruins, the Bridge, the street artists at the wharf, real sourdough, the feel of a city part American and part European, the Haight, the Farmer's Markets, awesome transportation, the FOG!, the quirky people, the ability to make a buck with just your witts, a folding table and a crowded street corner, the feeling of escape when you move away and relief when you move back, local politics, and yes, even Chinatown.

I absolutely left my heart in SF.

16. My "other" vote
is because I live two towns south in Pacifica, and I get every benefit of living next to the ocean without the density of the avenues.

It only takes a tiny corner of
This great big world to make the place we love
My home up on the hill
I find I love you still
I've been away, but now I'm back to tell you:

San Francisco, open your golden gate
You let no stranger wait - who's been knockin’ - who's been knockin'
outside your door
San Francisco, here comes your wanderin'one
And I'm sayin', and I'm sayin'
That I'm gonna wander no more
Other places, other places only make me love you best
Tell me, tell me you're the heart of the golden West, the golden West
San Francisco, welcome me home again
I'm coming home to go roamin' no more.

Chorus:
San Francisco, open your golden gate
You let no stranger wait who's been outside your door
San Francisco, here is your wandering one
Saying I'll wander no more
Other places only make me love you best
Tell me you're the heart of all the golden west
San Francisco, welcome me home again
I'm coming home to go roaming no more.

17. Love SF, but Berkeley is still my favorite city
SF gets all the bad weather, Berkeley is always temperate
SF gets all the phony hippies, Berkeley gets the real revolutionaries
SF gets has the marijuana clubs, Berkeley gets the stuff grown right in the parks
SF gets Golden Gate Park, Berkeley gets People's Park
And besides, where else could you find TRIPLE ROCK ALE?????

18. I Loooooove Berkeley
I spent four happy years there; wish it could have been more. I grew up in a whitebread suburb and by the time I hit Berkeley I was more than ready for it and for SF -- "the City."

Sunday mornings in North Beach, Haight-Ashbury, Nob Hill, Fog over the Bay, the Bart under the Bay, Union Square, Cafe Greco, and Sunsets over Golden Gate Bridge.

21. World microcosm.
There's a little bit of everything here and it all co-exist rather effortlessly.

Everyday I thank the powers that be for my good fortune.
