Aaagh! Help! I found a gray hair!
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 09:23 PM by liberalpragmatist
I'm not actually panicking, that's just an attention-getter. But seriously, I am curious. I'm a male, 18 years old with a head of thick black hair. I discovered today a single silver hair, not at my temples, but at the back of my head (actually, someone else noticed it and pointed it out to me). Does this mean anything? Or is it just an isolated gray hair? If it is the start of graying, does that mean that by the time I'm 20 I'm gonna have noticeable gray hair :), or can I relax and figure that I'll at least be in my thirties by the time I develop noticeable gray?

Just seeking answers is all.

4. Nah. Don't worry
Hair follicles sometimes go wonky. (My mom gleefully plucked one out of my head last time I saw her. I'm 28.)

5. Relax!
I had a single grey hair growing from the crown of my head from the time I was sixteen years old. I have very dark hair so you notice it (I bet you have very dark hair too, or you wouldn't have noticed).

I am now 47. I highlight my hair a little but it is still prodominently very dark brown. I now have about 15 or 20 of those silver hairs growing from the crown of my head, which ain't much for a 47 year old. I highlight not to cover the grey but just because I feel like having a few blonde streaks.

In other words, don't worry about it.

7. One nice thing about gray hair...
IT'S HAIR!!! :)

Sorry, don't worry man. I'm 30 and my hair is receding at the same rate that it is growing. (Save big$$$ on haircuts)

It really means nothing however, you could keep your hair forever. Look at Kerry! :) :) :)

Worry not young man, you have miles to go...

9. An uncle of my husband was totally gray by 30.
No one else had ever gone that route, so it was a little disturbing to him. It looked really good on him, though.

10. I think salt and pepper hair is sexy...
Could mean you're gonna be prematurely Gray...and that's ok with a lot of women. Don't worry about it. It's just hair. And if you are freaked out, you're a guy, dude. Just shave it.

11. eh, I wouldn't look good with a shaved head
If I actually go noticeably gray in a few years (something which I do think is VERY unlikely) I'll probably color it, or if it looks good, I'll keep it. But I definitely wouldn't shave my head - I would look horrible with it.

12. NA NA NA NA NA
I'll be 47 next month and don't have any gray hair. Relax, lg. My boyfriend (who very much dislikes gray hair; I could not care less)gets great results with Just For Men coloring. Get it one shade lighter than you think your hair is (if you get it too dark it will show).

Buy a pair of tweezers before you get into dying. I know because I've been dying my hair for 20 years. I don't even know what color it is anymore. But I think I would be bald if I plucked out even half the gray. Good luck with your gray hair. :nopity:

17. I'm almost 20...
and have noticed gray hairs. Also, a few minor wrinkles that weren't there when I was 18. Look at it this way, some guys actually do go bald and start going gray around the time of their HS graduation. Want to trade places with them?

22. Wait until your PUBES start to turn gray...
or your chest hair... OH THE HUMANITY OF IT ALL!

Do you have a will? Have you paid your life insurance policy? Do you have a DNR order? Are you an organ donor? (It's never too soon to be prepared.)

23. Sorry, can't help...too busy attending to my own.
;) It may be the only one you get for years. My husband has exactly one gray hair on his head that has been there for 15 years. I'd call him a bad name if I didn't like him so darned much!

24. 27 y/o
i've been getting more and more single gray hairs for the past 3 years...when the weather is warm, i just shave it bald...

I've been thinking that maybe the experiences of my life have stressed me ahead of my years...If only i could retire now to some oceanfront paradise, maybe I could actually add time to my life instead of eating it away with a crap job and bills

25. Can I have it?
I don't have that many grey hairs. When mine get the urge to turn grey, they jump out of my head then I have to pick 'em out of the shower strainer.

I pull a LOT of hair out of the drain these days...

26. I found my first gray hair at 18.
Thank God my sister-in-law is a stylist. Without her, I would have been completely gray by 45.

Gray hair before 40 is considered premature and is probably genetic. My 23 year old nephew has a lot of gray already.

27. Yeah... I guess my question is this:
Is ONE gray hair which isn't even at the temples considered prematuring graying? Or is it just a rogue follicle and not indicative of an overall pattern? My understanding has been that premature graying is when there is a clear pattern of graying that occurs, but I could be wrong. All I want to know is, is this just the start or nothing to worry abt or something else? I've gotten plenty of contradictory answers.

28. I found my first at 16 or 17
I'm still under 10% (maybe under 5%) 'salt' in my 'pepper'; I am now 34.

It's fairly evenly distributed, and unless you're up fairly close (within a couple of feet), it's really not noticeable.

I remember a girl from high school who had more grey at 16 than I do now. Somehow, it was pretty sexy.
