Anyone here play the bodhran? |

I'm thinking of taking lessons, even though I'm not really musically talented.

She is just learning and taking lessons from a friend of mine in an Irish band. Needless to say, at least for right now, I wish she would have taken up air guitar;)

There are some good You Tube videos that might help you get started. Just key in "bodhran" and look for the bodhran lesson videos.
Since bodhran is pronounced "BOW run" (and also "BAW run,") you can also search using alternative spellings if you need to.

14. Quick note for those who don't know: It's pronounced "bow-rahn." Irish Gaelic spelling is |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 06:56 PM by Redstone
spectacularly non-indicative of pronunciation to most speakers of English (including me).

16. Not to New England Irish folks. Definitely "bow" (as in "and arrow") |
|
first syllable up here.
Now there's an interesting regional pronunciation difference I'd not known about before tonight. Do you think it might be related to the fact that more of the immigrants to the southern USA were "Scots-Irish," as opposed to the majority of immigrants to the northeast being Catholic Irish?
There's a book I've seen in the library, but have never read, about how the "mid-south" area of the US (specifially southern Appalachia) has been largely shaped by the fact the most of the (white) people there are descended from the original Scots-Irish settlers.
Makes sense if you think about it, doesn't it?

17. Makes sense -- most of the "Celts" I knew in NC and VA were Scottish or "Scots Irish" |
|
ie not Catholic.
Interesting!
