The knife is the important thing: the irritant is released when they're crushed, so you want to use a thin, sharp, non-serrated knife to keep crushing damage minimal.

With most of it hanging out of your mouth. The bread absorbs the fumes from the onion and keeps your eyes from watering. John Glad to help.

There's a reason it works which I can't remember -- but it does. Something about the flame burning off the gas released by the onion.

Turn a burner on high and peel the onion near it (be careful of course). The heat absorbs the gases as you cut. Use an ultra sharp knife when cutting, too. The more jagged a cut, the more gases escape.
