Anyone here play sports?
I'm pretty much a fan of all the major sports, but I don't play them that much anymore. I used to play a lot of basketball when I was younger, but that ceased around my middle school years.

Currently, the only sport I play with any regularity is racquetball. I don't play very well, but it is a good way to burn off some extra calories.

Maybe one day I'll play golf. That seems to be the sport to play as one gets older.

1. GOlf and tennis
When I was young I played baseball pretty well. I had to give that up whenI got my first job, so I started a city-league softball team with my HS friends. I played competitive softball until 3 years ago (I'm 47). I also am decent at tennis and golf, which I started playing when I was about 12.

2. Too many injuries
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 01:06 AM by camero
Bicycling seems to be my sport of choice now. :(

Played Baseball, Basketball, Lacrosse, Wrestling, Soccer, ran Track, in school or in a league. Football in the back yard. God I miss those days. Missed an organized softball game for charity to go to my best friends wedding (I was best man) in my 20s.

3. I play sports
I was the "fat kid" growing up though and there weren't many sports for me to play. So for me it's the exact opposite. I play sports more often now.

I couldn't bring myself to play golf. No offense to the golf crowd. My grandma used to play so for me there's like a social stigma involved.

4. I know the stereoype isn't always true
I've always associated golf with conservatism. I'm sure there's a lot of liberal golfers, but the general tendency of golfers tends to lean toward Republicanism.

Of course, when it comes to professional sports, a majority are probably Republicans for economic reasons.

7. I shoot baskets at the hoop outside my house
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 01:12 AM by mvd
I'm pretty good, I guess. I've missed doing it because it's been so cold here. And I do a little hit and catch, but that's about it. No real sports. I'm a big sports watcher, though. Golf also interests me. It's boring on TV but one of the most fun to play.

10. yes, and love it...
Granted, the bumps and bruises hurt a little longer than when I was younger (I am 31). Actually, I would recommend everyone play some sports, whatever they enjoy. Around a year ago, I joined a flag football team. I was awful, and in bad shape. I have steadily improved though. Since then, I have played either flag football, or softball pretty much year round. It is so much fun. In competition, you push yourself so much harder than if you are just jogging around the block. You can make friends. If you play during the week (evenings), it helps to break up the five day work week. It is also a great motivation to get off the damn sofa (or office chair). I also enjoy golf. I don't really look at it as an old person game (although understand it being thought of in those terms). It is so challenging, and a blast. Golf is always better, if you can have a few cold ones on the course :D I don't get the chance/cash to play very often, but when I do, I thoroughly enoy it...Kevin.

12. Softball, a little hoops, touch football, boxing...
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 06:53 AM by rezmutt
Don't run as well as I used to, but the object now is to relax and have fun!

On edit: Almost forgot -- target-mitt boxing! This is a blast! We either use target mitts vs. 12 oz. gloves, or just 12 oz. gloves with glove contact only. What a workout! Your sweat will have sweat. Whew.

13. Golf, bowling and pickup basketball
My golf game is slightly on the improve, wild driver but regaining the nice high draw with my Hogan blades after a couple of lessons. So I'm enthused again and playing 2 or 3 times per week.

Bowling once a week, in a mixed league. Great crowd and plenty of laughs, but I'm not dedicated enough to invest in fancy new equipment.

Most fun of all is a new hoops pickup league featuring guys who hang out in Las Vegas sportsbooks. I'm one of the oldest but tallest. The youngsters kid me about using the backboard for virtually every shot.

Geez, this thread reminds I have not played touch football in years, after my same-age friend blew out his Achilles. No tennis lately, either. But every summer in Saratoga I play plenty of ping pong at a recreational club.

15. Ice Hockey weekly
I play golf religiously but I dont consider it a sport. its good excercise.

ask any older golfer and they will tell you its a younger persons game. Any of them would wish they started at a younger age.

18. Golf is death
I've created an alternate sort of golf with an archery bow. A golf
course-like range of targets that you walk to. Like golf, number of
arrows fired. Some of the targets involve shooting several hundred
meters as an archery bow angled up goes quite far.

I call it golf with arrows. Its for golf courses where the
groundskeeper's are a bit lazy. :-)

Scuba diving is nice sport as well, and hiking for that matter.

20. On that course, if someone yells "Fore"
you better be on your toes!!!

I need to find some people to go diving with.

Volleyball, Wallyball, and... Kickball. I don't know why I hate to admit that one, but it's a blast.

19. Golf is all I can handle these days
I used to play a lot of soccer when I was younger but those days are long gone. I coach my son's team but it's not nearly as much fun as playing.
