So, a colleague explained why minority precincts need fewer voting machines.
At Ministerial Association today, one guy was saying he'd been watching some news show that contrasted two polling places in NYC. One had long lines, the other no lines at all. He thought they said the one with long lines only had two voting machines or so. The other had several. The polling place with fewer machines was majority African American, the other majority white.

Another colleague explained the logic of this very succinctly. And I quote: "White people have to go to work." Seriesly.

3. I said "Like everything else, poor people and minorities get fewer voting machines.
Which ultimately means they have fewer rights. Which is racist." She's not from some fundie church, so at least knew she SHOULD be ashamed to be called racist. So, she shut up.

But, yeah, unbelievable.

4. It's true. Poor people and minorities have nothing to do
but sit around drinking malt liquor and making babies. They can do that while standing in line, can't they? :banghead:

5. I thought it was going to be something like
since they are the "minority" there are fewer of them.

8. See. I thought maybe some brown people worked. I just suspected as much.
I could make the assumption, based on the conversation with her, that all white people are stupid. But I try not to stereotype.

A LOT of white people are stupid. Apparently.

16. I don't much. She's pastor of another church. Different congregation,
different denomination.

She keeps trying to get me to do our youth programs together. But I hear stuff like this from her, and even worse about glbt people, and I know I want our kids nowhere around her. Two of my youth group kids have gay parents. I'm afraid she'd really traumatize them.

I just have to deal with her a couple of times a month. Which is plenty.

17. Pardon me for asking this, but how does she get away with it?
Doesn't she have some kind of supervisor who could tell her to stop it with the bigotry?

18. Not sure how that works in her denomination. Her congregation doesn't seem to mind.
Edited on Tue Nov-04-08 04:46 PM by mycritters2
In my denomination, I answer to my congregation for employment--so, they could fire me for being stupid--and to my Association for standing--so, they could discipline me (letter of reprimand, recommend counseling, make me "un-ordained" depending on the seriousness of the offense). Her denomination is more hierarchical. I don't know whether the congregation has any say about such things. I don't even know if her higher-ups know what an ass she is.

But, her stand on glbt issues is in keeping with her denomination, which teaches, officially, that "homosexuality is incompatible with the Christian faith" or something real close to that. So, saying gay people are going to hell isn't likely to get her in a lot of trouble.
