The only thing I'm sad about--I wish my mom could see this.
My mom took little steps toward civil rights. Her brother, my uncle, loved to tell the story of the time she saw a waiter about to ask a group of African American students to leave a restaurant when she was in college. She realized what was happening, and took a seat with them. The waiter didn't know what to do, didn't feel comfortable asking black young men AND a white woman to leave. So, he just walked away. She and my uncle were meeting for lunch, so she asked him to sit with her and these African American students, and explained what happened. He'd always end this story with the words "I'm proud of your mama and you should be too."

Or the time the principal of my grade school called and asked if she would be room mother for all three of our home rooms. She reminded him that the rule was a parent wouldn't be asked to do this for more than one of their kids. He told her that there were parents who were refusing to be room parents for some home rooms--the rooms that would include the kids from the first two African American families to move into our district. Of course, she said she'd do it. That night at dinner she told my dad how disgusted she was with people's attitudes about race.

Or the simple moment when she and I stood in front of some news story about MLK. I asked who he was. She said "That's Rev. King. He's a pastor. And a great man." I could tell she was in awe of him.

I wish she were here to see this. I hope she's seeing it wherever she is.

1. Mine too.
Mom, you'd be so proud of our country today.

3. My mother would be flipping out. She laughed uproariously at racists and all their words and deeds.
She would be LOVING this. :)
