Civil rights by Ballot Proposition should be outlawed.

7. Welcome to California.
The state that wiped out the arts in public schools because people voted themselves massive property tax cuts.

I'm hurting too. We were going to get married on our next trip home.

14. maybe i've not been paying attention . . .
. . . are you taking this loss as your own personal failure?! J., don't do that. The failure is on the shoulders of the bigots. Thousands of people like you gave it all they could, but bigotry is still too strong. It's going to require the power of the courts to protect this minority from the tyranny of the majority. Might does not make right when it comes to civil rights.

The loss (if it is, there's still a chance) is not your fault, my friend.

10. Look at it this way..
Gays and Lesbian rights are still WAAAAAY better than they were 8 years ago. Maryland has a gay marriage ban from years ago yet they have the right to get all sorts of domestic benefits..Most companies here will offer them.
Personally I think right now they are better off focusing on getting the actual benefits of marriage and calling it a "civil union" than trying to pass unpopular legislation (if any state were going to vote that down it would be Cali which means it should NOT be tried in other states)
The acceptance is getting better now, it just takes time. Civil rights don't change overnight sadly..Obama is the culmination of 40 years of hard work.

It's not fair that I'm not experiencing the same level of happiness as every other Democrat.

This isn't like sports and it's just a stupid loss.

I'm not trying to cause an argument. I'm just saying this may not be the best day to tell gay people and their supporters to look on the bright side.

I can tell you it's very dark in California today.

21. I understand that
But you should not let this frustrate you all, especially on a day of historic value..The country IS moving forward and what happened last night with Obama should NOT be undervalued either...I will say this again..I think equal rights WILL come..its just a matter of time. Think about how the judiciary will change now..And its quite evident that the real forefront in this battle will be the judiciary.
Take some time and listen to some of the civil rights veterns...It will help you keep inspired...My state is as liberal a CA and has a same sex marriage ban in its constittuion...Its more important to move on and keep fighting than to curse and feel awful about political realities. I've said this many a time...In the 20 years of my real adulthood, I've seen gay rights take a huge fundamental step forward..Its two steps forward, one step back..This is a step back..
Look at the generation gap on the voting for agaisnt Prop 8--the strength in the younger population should be VERY encouraging

And please don't assume I've never been discriminated agaisnt. I have. And just bitching about it does NOTHING.

I never EVER thought I would be flamed for looking for the positive.

31. I don't think it's "grouching" to be pissed about civil rights.
You do understand that there are over 1000 rights afforded to heterosexuals that are being denied to homosexual couples, right?

I am strongly of the opinion that we need to be angry and fired up and "grouch" about it. It's an important issue and we can't be dismissive or complacent about it. Not for one minute.

33. AYou're wrong, civil rights DO change overnight. They did LAST NIGHT.
Now all the thousands of couples who were married LEGALLY in California have been stripped of their civil rights. California voted overwhelmingly to make a black man president on the same fucking ballot on which they stripped other Americans of civil rights.

You know... It doesn't help much to be told that our rights are WAAAAAY better than they were 8 years ago the day after this horrific proposition passed. And bragging about domestic partner benefits... those benefits that cost me TWICE what they cost a straight person, that doesn't help much either.

Walk away from this thread. Stop trying to defend yourself. You've talked yourself into a corner. You've said things that you didn't even realize were insensitive. You're not a bad person at all, but if you keep insisting that you're right here, you're going to come across as one.

20. It's a shitty outcome
I mean taking away rights from a group of people that already existed under state law will go down in history as a big bigoted mistake. I hope the next generation of kids will look back at the days of gay rights discrimination with the same sense of disbelief and disgust that we now look at pre-Civil Rights era.

If one person can give me a reason why gay marriage should be banned without using some lame biblical "marriage was created for one man and one woman cuz gawd said so" excuse, I'd love to hear it

22. There really isn't another reason.
The excuses are all they’ve got. Like somehow it changes a marriage between heterosexuals. Or the whole idea that it is immoral, fuck inequality is what is immoral.

The saddest and cruelest thing is homosexuals have been invalidated. I think of guys like Matthew Shepard and all the guys who tried to have heterosexual relationships to satisfy some idiotic notion that their love isn’t real.

I just detest these churches that preach hate. The bible doesn’t actually even say anything about gays, Sodom was about inhospitality! Fuck those assholes, just fuck them! They should have their tax free status removed!

Somehow I do not believe that Jesus - the historical figure - not the biblical icon - would have been happy with today's outcomes in Florida, California, Arkansas and anywhere else there were rights taken away from human beings.

42. Talk about your "does not compute" moments...
A majority of Californians voted for an African-American man to be their next president, but similarly voted to deny people their civil rights.

I've had so many arguments with my religious liberal friends (including those of color). They cannot bring themselves to see this as a civil rights issue. It's enough to make me :banghead:

How can one of the most tolerant states in the union be so intolerant? :(
