1. What the hell happened to him?
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 01:21 PM by Shell Beau
Jeez, didn't even know he was ill.

Sad!

On edit, I saw that he died of cancer. Figures. It kills about everyone now a days.

15. He had cancer apparently.
He went to medical school but never became a doctor- but the things he learned in medical school gave him the background for a lot of his writing, including the tv series ER. A lot of the series is based on true or semi true stories of things that really happened at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He was a great writer.

Also, the script wasn't picked up until 20 years after he wrote it and had written other successful books.

2. Well I haven't forgiven him for his anti-global warming screed
in one of his last books, but he was an excellent writer.

Along with almost all of his other books. After he became a right wing shill for the anti-global warming cause I never read another.

9. I read Airframe once flying home from Europe
Talk about a visceral experience. Read the first couple of pages http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0345402871/ref=sib_dp_ptu#reader-link">here. If that doesn't grab you by the gonads, then nothing will.
