Should DU have a jobs board?
I have to think that there are DUers out there looking for people to hire. And, if so, I'd sure like to know who they are!

1. I agree...
I have a background and interest in a field* that a lot of DUers have connections in, left my "real" job to care for a family crisis and now I'm stuck at Starbucks because of the Bush economy which came to exist between the time I started my "real" job and the present because I need to keep the health benefits. I could make more money cooking or bar-tendering.

So...as a donor member. +1. 9 more and a mission statement...and you can send it off to Skinner.

*- Fundraising/Development, preferably in an arts organization. A lot of training and volunteer experience and knowledge of art, only one year paid experience though.

P.S. What's your background? I'm actually kind of good at find other people jobs, even if I suck at it for personal gain.

4. I have a media background
I have been a reporter and editor for eons -- business writing mostly, but also arts and entertainment. I was recently laid off and need a new gig.

5. Are you familiar with journalismjobs.com?
The American Copy Editors Society has a jobs board at Yahoo Groups: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ACESjobs/ and Craigslist has an employment category for writing/editing. Also, if your state has an organization such as the California Newspaper Publishers Association, it may have a jobs board online.

6. hmm...
I do know of a quite a few openings in that field.

Not just in journalism, there is a huge market for experienced media professionals in both the private sector and the non-profit sector working to shape public image and liaison with journalists. The problem is that these jobs are often on the coasts. Your experience as an editor is huge though because there is a need for people to create newsletters and edit web-content (articles, pdf, text-content, video, etc.), often as part of these same positions.

Let me run a few searches...I checked your profile to find a location, I hope you don't mind. I'm back...nothing in MI at all unfortunately. Some things I came across to give you an idea what is available in the NPO sector.

http://www.idealist.org/if/i/en/av/Job/317040-52 (In DC...Senior Editor for American Assoc. of Museums.)

http://www.idealist.org/if/i/en/av/Job/316291-6 (In Atl...Writer/Editor for Habitat for Humanity.)

http://www.idealist.org/if/i/en/av/Job/314293-6 (Communications Coordinator for ACLU of Southern California.)

Based on what you've said about yourself...you'd probably be competitive for any of them.

All these postings were from Idealist.org. You can only look at three job postings before you have to register for free.

8. Thanks
That was nice of you. I'll check those out. I know I might have to relocate. But the idea of moving scares me because I'd have a house to sell. And then there is the issue of relocating the wife and kid.

2. I discourage people from posting certain personal info on this site.
Employers can Google, and mischief-makers abound.

But it seems to me that DU could serve DUers well with something like a jobs board. If we keep sufficient anonymity, the effect could be very positive.

11. I don't think this is a bad idea at all.
I suppose the Career Help and Advice forum could serve the purpose:
