Catholic DUer's mad about Prop 8? Stop tithing
A good deal of your money goes right to the Vatican to sponsor more of this hate. So don't pay for that kind of hate - cut the purse string.

Also, if you are Mormon, stop tithing too...

1. Catholics generally don't tithe, FYI.
That's more of a Protestant thing.

Good sentiment, though, Tav.

3. The problem is that the money donated to churches
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 04:57 PM by oktoberain
also goes toward funding food pantries, paying for utility and rent assistance, and other vital services that our government simply is not providing for people who are desperately in need. Before people stop giving money to these places, we need to lobby the government to revisit welfare reform (and fix it) because the system put into place in 1996 simply is NOT working.

Edit: Midlo has informed us that Catholics don't tithe, so I edited accordingly. :)

4. Exactly. My money actually goes to reduce the debt on my church's
building along with programs for the needy.

It's the donations to the Vatican that need to be challenged.

6. That is true, but Catholic Charities is the largest in the world.
and does a great deal of good works. There are generally special collections throughout the year to support Catholic Charities.

7. Maybe, maybe not.
Here's the problem.

You can't categorize Catholic churches in the same way that you can't categorize Christians. Believe me...I see people trying to do it every day on DU, and it's no better than the racist, homophobic, misogynist stuff out there.

Prejudice is prejudice. Ignorance is ignorance.

And I'm not making that statement in order to put those labels on you. I understand what you are saying. But I'm a Christian and a Catholic and if you've been to my church and you truly believe that you understand it, PM me and I will make sure we are talking about the same church.

My church is not anti-gay. The pastor of my church...a local legend who has actually moved into "pastor emeritus" status because he has been stricken with Parkinson's disease...has consistently painted a picture of the people that God loves. Gays are in the picture.

Fuck the Vatican, you know? I'm not in Italy. I'm in Silicon Valley. So be pissed off at the Vatican if you want to be. Be my guest.

You're wrong about the tithing thing, too. So fucking wrong that you've proven you know as much about my Catholic church as Sarah Palin knows about the CONTINENT of AFRICA.

I struggled with the tithing thing. I am self employed. I am HEMORRHAGING money right now as I am maxed out on two credit cards and working on a third.

I approached my pastor and asked him what he felt the "right" amount was to give.

He paused and got angry with me.

"DON'T EVER ASK THAT QUESTION AGAIN. Give what's in your heart. If you can't give anything, God understands that."

So, Taverner, that's my church. The Catholic church. Show me the hate in my pastor's statement and I'll cut them off like a drunk at closing time.

And if you can't do that, maybe you should reconsider your blanket statements.

This post is offered with all due respect because I honestly believe you are a better person than the words you've written. You're angry. We all are, for different reasons.

:patriot:

8. There are also weekly offerings going to different causes
and most of what you give stays at your local parish. There are weeks that support Catholic Relief Services, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, etc... those go directly to the cause of social justice. If you have any questions, ask your parish and diocese for how much goes for whatever causes.

I know that most of the Prop 8 came from Knights of Columbus dues. I have refused to join them and they will never see a copper coated zinc penny from me.
