Do you still have your dog tags?
Real ones.
Issued to you when you raised your right hand and swore to defend and obey.
I just came across mine.
T63 (The year I signed up?)
B NEG (Blood type)
Christian (What I was back then)

No notch in the tag.
I think I remember a pair with the notch.
My serial number then started with 'FG', which we said stood for 'Fucking Guard". I was in the air national guard.
Later my number changed to 'AOxxxxxxx'.
Air Force Officer?
I remember hearing that the notch was so they could be wedged (pounded) between your upper front teeth when you had departed the quick for the dead.

According to Mortuary Affairs:
(Don't you love that name?)
One of the more common myths involves the reason for the notch on the tag issued between 1941 and the early 1970's. Battlefield rumor held that the notched end of the tag was placed between the front teeth of battlefield casualties to hold the jaws in place. No official record of American soldiers being issued these instructions exists; the only purpose of "the notch" was to hold the blank tag in place on the embossing machine. The machine used at this time doesn't require a notch to hold the blank in place, hence, today's tags are smooth on all sides.

1. I lost mine a year and a half ago.

I left my keys in my van and some dipshit took them. I had an asshole co-worker tell me he saw them, but forgot to tell me. Mine had no notch, but my dad's do. He told me that the notch is where the tag is jammed between any remaining teeth as a secure way of tagging your corpse.

6. Somewhere around here.
Don't let your dingle-dangle dangle in the dirt.
Pick up your dingle-dangle, tuck it in your shirt.

12. Fuck no.
For one thing, they forced me to declare a religion even though I had renounced Catholicism years before. They said, "There are no atheists in foxholes." So for that reason alone I chucked them at first opportunity.

13. When they asked me, "What religion?"
I told them, "I don't care", so my dog tags
read: "NO REL PREF"
