We spent our early Friday night in a Unitarian church
I was shocked to see the walls completely bare. Where were the sculptures, paintings and stained glass depictions of the gruesome torture and murder of Jesus? How the fuck do they expect to scare the children?

1. ...or intrigue them?

Funny, the boyfriend recently mentioned a desire to go to the Unitarian church and check it out. I told him, have a delightful time...

7. "What can we do to rein in rampant consumerism..
.. we want what we don't need.. for a sense of self worth... when all that we need is located right here." places hands over her heart

The patchouli was strong with that one.

5. I've been a UU for nearly 10 years
UUism has its flaws, but I think its effort to be inclusive and diverse makes up for them. In our fellowship there are humanists, atheists, Buddhists, pagans, a couple liberal Christians, and a lot of "recovering" Christians. Also, our coordinator of religious education (whom my kids, wife, and I love) and her female partner were married (not legally, unfortunately) last summer. Their ceremony (which I attended) was done by our church's former minister (herself bi-sexual).

And we live in a rural, red/purple part of our state. It's a haven...a real haven.

20. that's how I used to feel when I went to a Protestant church
it seemed, so, sterile.

One time we went to one of those Hari Krishna dinners, and I thought, this place looks like my Catholic church, with all the bleeding statues and such.

I'll pass on the Hostel religion, thanks.

22. I visited a 16th century Spanish mission Church in California
which had a dozen or so painting of the "stations" of the cross. It was the goriest religious display I'd ever seen. I couldn't wait to get out of there. One of the people I was with was German Catholic and he thought it was beautiful and very moving.

23. My sister got married in a Boston area UU church.
It was really a nice ceremony, incorporating parts of her past religion, The United Church of Christ, and his past religion, Judaism.

There was absolutely no preaching about how women should be subservient to men, no threats of the wrath of God for one's sins, no requests for money. It was a great ceremony.

They now attend a UU Church in northern VA, and I've gone to several services there. It's a really nice positive atmosphere. It's amazing how you can do without the blood and gore and walk out of service feeling good and ALIVE!
