I really, REALLY should have known better.
Journey To The Center Of The Earth has always been one of my favorite books- indeed, I have the unabridged audio reading of it, and I play it far more often than I want to admit. It's one of the classic great tales, and if you've never indulged you really should.

So naturally they had to make it into a movie. It stars Rick Schroder (little Ricky is all growed up now!), Victoria Pratt, and a very beat-up Peter Fonda. Of course I don't have to say that they took a beautiful story, ripped it to shreds, tossed it into the trash, and scratched a bullshit morality tale into the celluloid instead.

I hate when they do that. No, I really REALLY HATE when they do that. Hell, the 70s cartoon version was more entertaining than this one.

My simple advice: Stay away from it. I didn't, so now I have to go purge this crap from my brain by playing the REAL story again.

I really should have known better.

1. My dear Prisoner_Number_Six...
I'm so sorry, sweetie...

Just the fact that you should have known better just makes it all the more painful...

2. Would you believe watching it actually gave me a headache.
That's how painful it was.

And that's something I don't say too often.

9. Should have read the imdb comments board
Of course I was a sucker too (I also love the story) Plays on ion tv every few months if you want to watch it over again and see if you missed any of the "nuance"

The comments section at imdb are mixed, but the message board pretty much sums it up...

"Such a boring, bad, horrible movie"

"I can't believe anyone who worked on this horrible movie would want to admit that they did work on it. IT SUCKS BIG TIME. Do not buy this movie, and I wouldn't even recommend renting it. I am going to throw mine away, as I have never been so disappointed with any movie. Just horrible. Horrible cast, horrible writing and dialog, horrible settings, horrible make up, horrible special effects, and horrible horrible Peter Fonda. God this is just the worst. Nothing about this movie was even half way good. Just horrible!"

"If anything I believe this might subtract from the theater movie... because its so poorly made."

"It's one of the most boring and slowest movies I've ever seen (even as far as "made for TV movies" go)."

"I downloaded this thinking it was the one with brendan frazer, jesus whata terrible film, bad acting, bad storyline, bad bad bad, it's a pity cos i enjoyed the old one with james mason."

and this guy couldn't wait for it to finish to chime in: "watching it now, it's so damn boring."
