Okay, I'm going through one of the worst times in my life at the moment. I'm gonna be 30 soon and, despite working on a career for six years, I still have to fight for every dollar and such. I'm also single. I've gone through a plethora of women in the last three years. There's always been some reason for things not to work out (Obviously). It's been very depressing and I'm having nightmares and I'm very emotional, life is kind of soinning out of control....
So I really don't need comments from my parents about my single status. The other day my mom made some crack about "No wonder you don't have a wife." And tonight I made a comment about how I always watchout for my nuts when I'm at my sister's cause there's dogs and kids running around.. My dad says "So, you're not using them."
Worst part about that is that you can't even say, "Ask your mom!" Or something cause you'd just be dissing your Grandma. Anyway, I know my family is hard. We're smartasses and we're basically expected to take everything lightly... but this shit really bugs me right now. Especially when I'm coming from My LITTLE sister's house, who's married, a homeowner and such, and my eldest sister is there with her two kids and hubby.
I just don't need it. My goal in life is not to get married and then drink my brain numb to kill the dullness till I die, but I still don't need this shit.

1. Parents only get bearable when they get too old to fight back. |
|
Until then, they are still your boss, no matter what you do. If you got married, it would be about kids. If you had kids, it would be about how you were raising them.
Then one day they realize how old they've gotten and how none of their nagging really does anything anyway, and they start seeing you as an adult, and it gets better. I couldn't do anything right until my late 30s.
There's no way around it, either. Sorry. They'll piss you off until just about the time you start worrying that they won't be around forever, then they'll get nicer. Been my experience, anyway. If you find a better way, bottle it and sell it. Grateful adults everywhere will love you for it.

15. Another thing, when they get too old to fight back, the power equation has changed. |
|
Significantly.
You don't HAVE to get married, no matter what they say. I never did.

2. As someone turning 37 in a bit, I agree largely with paragraphs 1 and 4. |

But then, I'm a miserable sod right now.

3. I'm 36, HEyHEY, and have never married or had children |
|
I'm a nice guy and I've been looking, too, but no dice. I see all of the people out there who are in bad relationships and wonder how come I get passed up for those assholes. I guess I don't have anything important to say, but you are not alone. A lot of us guys out here are in the same boat. I would really like to have a kid some day, but I'm afraid that by the time I find someone it will be too late. If I'm not attracting women my age now, I seriously doubt that some younger woman is going to come along and get hitched to me when I'm in my 40s.

I've actually entertained that thought, but I'd have to empty out my retirement account to get it done. That's beside the fact that it would feel like prostitution to me.

7. Then here's a smart-ass response ;) |

"I'm staying single to prevent prostate cancer. I can't get daily 'solo-sex' when I'm married."
:P
(Yes, there is a link between pleasuring one's self daily and preventing prostate cancer. What you learn on the Internets, eh? ;))

I'm sorry they're giving you such a hard time. That really sucks.
Maybe the next time they bug you about it, you should say, "Don't go there, ok? I'm in no mood..." or somesuch. You don't have to shout; but they should know where the boundary line is.

12. I wish getting married wasnt a lifestyle to be forced on you by parents |
|
I dont see myself ever getting married or having kids. I have no desire to have kids and do not see a time when I will ever want kids. I also dont have the energy or the desire to put any effort into a relationship so I don't bother. It works for me and there shouldn't be anything wrong with it.

Amazing how our friend HEyHEY manages to apply horribly wrong titles to otherwise innocent posts.
I shudder to think what his pickup lines are.

I'm sorry your family doesn't get it. I can tell you from experience that chasing the dream of conformity even when it doesn't fit is NOT the way to go.

21. Heck, I'm 36 and they still condescend and patronize me... |
|
As parents, I think they're entitled... (and politicians talk of entitlement programs being bad; for once might they be right? Not really; they've been there and done that before so I probably ought to listen to them...)
I am sorry for your predicament. While common for people to marry in their 20s, or for some to give birth before the age of 18, others don't find that special someone - not even into their early 40s. There are some things parents can be right about, but dissing your marital status seems outright wrong. And I can't believe I used the word "dissing", but it's all good...

My step sister did all those frilly girl things I rejected. So she got to plan a wedding and have her grandkids. Me, well I'm happy for the most part!

Nightmares seem to be more and more common lately. I think the economy has something to do with it. There is a medication that can help, Trazadon. http://depression.emedtv.com/trazodone/trazodone-as-a-sleep-aid.html It is much safer than Ambien. I was having night terrors and it has helped immensely. Other than that, I agree with jobycom.

My Mom asked me whether I was Gay when I was about 30 and having some stereotypically Gay characteristics (theatre major and opera singer) and not even remotely married.......I told her I was not particularly Gay, but was, instead, just skipping my first marriage. (Mom has been married three times).....My Dad was far better about it, I think he figured it was better to just not get married if you were not the marryin' type.
I met my wife when I was 33, we married when I was 35, had Children when I was 38, 40 and 46.......
The Children changed my life a LOT more than getting married did BTW.....
